Sunshine Classic Returns to Clearwater for 2027 Season

Each February, the softball world begins to stir again as teams shake off the offseason and prepare for another competitive year. In 2027, that early momentum will once again build along Florida’s Gulf Coast when the Sunshine Classic, hosted by Triple Crown Sports, returns to St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida, from February 13–15.

With divisions ranging from 10U through 18U, the Sunshine Classic has quickly become one of the most attractive early-season events for travel programs seeking quality competition, warm weather, and a front-row seat to one of college softball’s premier opening weekends.

At Extra Inning Softball, we view tournaments like the Sunshine Classic as critical checkpoints in the yearly development cycle. February events often serve as the first opportunity for teams to evaluate rosters, experiment with lineups, and measure progress before the national summer schedule begins.

A Unique February Softball Atmosphere

What makes the Sunshine Classic stand apart from many early tournaments is its connection to the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational, one of the most prestigious Division I events held during the opening weekend of the college softball season.

While competing in the Sunshine Classic, travel teams and families can also attend the Clearwater Invitational, where some of the nation’s top NCAA Division I programs take the field. Through Triple Crown Sports, participants can purchase tickets to watch the games in person.

The result is a rare softball environment where youth athletes, travel teams, and Division I college programs share the same weekend spotlight.

Players have the opportunity to compete during the day and then sit in the stands at night watching the very athletes many of them hope to emulate in the future.

From a developmental standpoint, that exposure matters.

Watching elite college programs perform at the highest level offers young athletes a firsthand look at the speed, skill, and preparation required to compete at the next stage of the sport. View more tournament news here.

Early Season Benchmark for Travel Teams

Over the past several seasons, the Sunshine Classic has evolved into more than just another tournament on the calendar.

Instead, it has become a spring training-style benchmark for travel softball organizations preparing for the long competitive stretch ahead.

For many programs, February represents the first time players are competing in full tournament conditions since the previous summer. That makes the Sunshine Classic an ideal testing ground to evaluate pitching rotations, defensive chemistry, offensive approaches, and roster depth.

Coaches often use early-season events to answer critical questions:

  • Which players have made offseason improvements?

  • How do new roster additions fit within the lineup?

  • What adjustments need to happen before the summer championship season?

Because of its timing and location, the Sunshine Classic provides a valuable environment to begin answering those questions.

Positioning at the Front of the Calendar

As Triple Crown Sports continues to expand its fastpitch portfolio, the Sunshine Classic has emerged as one of the anchor events at the front of its competitive calendar.

Now entering its third year in 2027, the event continues to grow alongside the broader momentum surrounding February softball in Clearwater.

With strong facilities, warm Florida weather, and the proximity to one of college softball’s most celebrated opening weekends, the Sunshine Classic provides a compelling destination for travel organizations across the country.

In my opinion, tournaments positioned at the very beginning of the season often carry more long-term impact than mid-season events. Early competition shapes a team’s trajectory, influences training adjustments, and helps programs identify their identity before the summer championship push.

That is precisely where the Sunshine Classic fits into the national softball landscape.

A Launching Pad for the Season

Ultimately, the Sunshine Classic has grown into something more than an early tournament. It represents the official start of the travel softball year for many teams, offering a first glimpse of how rosters and programs will perform in the months ahead.

Between competitive matchups, the opportunity to watch Division I programs in Clearwater, and the excitement of a new season beginning, the Sunshine Classic delivers a weekend that captures the full spirit of the sport.

For athletes, coaches, and families eager to begin the next chapter of their softball journey, Florida’s Gulf Coast will once again serve as the stage where the 2027 season truly begins. View more tournament news here.
