In softball, there are four benchmarks that girls want to reach.
- They can’t wait to be the age where college coaches start to notice them and hopefully recruit them seriously
- They count down the days until Sept. 1 of their junior year of high school when they can receive official offers from colleges
- They are excited for the National Signing Day when they get to put their name on the dotted line and pledge their commitment to the school of their choice
- They look forward to going to college and stepping on the field for the first time as a member of the softball program they chose
2024’s Jayden Jones, Ramsey Walker, and Esther White have already hit the first three benchmarks and are just months away from reaching the fourth.
A few years ago, all of these goals seemed so far away, but in the blink of an eye, they are each getting ready to enter their final high school ball season.
“I remember when I first started playing high school ball that I was going after the dream to be able to have the opportunity to play college softball,” said Walker, who is committed to the University of Arkansas and is a senior at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, La., “and then now that I’m here it’s like wow I’ve grown up so much and so much has happened since the beginning. I remember dreaming of this and so it’s crazy that all the hard work and determination and all the hours and hours I’ve put into have finally paid off.”
All three of these girls also play high-level travel ball with Walker and White competing for Sparks Elite Ross/Stewart and Jones playing for Mojo Abernathy. As much as they love it, they realize there is something different about getting to compete for their local high school with girls that they have grown up with.
