EXTRA ELITE EIGHTY 16U SPOTLIGHT
The Extra Elite Eighty 16U Club Rankings were recently released and TLI will be taking a look at the teams that made the top 80 for the next few weeks.
Today the spotlight is on …
Club Team: EXPLOSION HAGBERG/SCHIMMEL
Extra Elite Eighty 16U Ranking: T-56
Head Coach: STEVE SCHIMMELÂ
Fall 2020 Record: The team went 39-25-1 with notable wins over American Pastime Gold-Velasquez,Corona Angels-FTS, Explosion Sanchez/Berouty 2023 and Explosion Hilliard 2023, and they have an invite to the PGF 16U Platinum Nationals this summer.
The Returners:
- Rykee Martinez (2022, 3B/2B, a team player with a big bat, soft hands and a quick release)
- Lauryn Ureno (2022, 2B/SS/OF, a slapper with good speed that can play multiple positions)
- Peyton Powers (2022, OF/C, a coachable, gritty player with a passion for the game, strong arm and solid behind the plate)
- Katlyn Gandara (2022, P, a hard-nosed right-hander with multiple pitches who also swings a big bat)
- Sam Pagan (2022, P, the ace of the staff with good command of pitches and throws in the 60s)
- Brynn Fukumoto (2022, OF, a hard-nosed, fearless player with a big bat and speed to cover a lot of ground in the OF)
- Paola Garcia (2022, 1B/OF, a team player, lefty hitter with some pop in her bat and speed)
- Sammy Bohorquez (2022, P, a passionate player with a strong desire to be better and a wicked change-up)
- Malia Martin (2022, OF/2B, a student of the game with a desire to learn)
- Anahi Pintado (2023, C/3B, commands the game behind the plate with a solid arm and blocking skills)
- Cal State San Bernardino-commit Ava Arce (2022, SS/OF, a passionate team leader with a strong arm and big bat)
The Newcomers:
- Veronica Moore (2023, 1B, a big bat that puts in lot of work on and off the field)
- Averie Prescott (2023, 3B/C, a team player with a great attitude that’s solid both defensively and offensively)
What will it take for your team to be successful this season?
“Continue with our strong pitching and defense and come up with clutch hitting,” Schimmel said.
Can you describe your pitching staff?
“We have three solid pitchers that have the confidence and ability to take the rubber in any big game,” Schimmel said. “Sam Pagan has stepped up to be the ace as of now, but Katlyn and Sammy are knocking on the door.”
