GEORGIA IMPACT LEAVES MARK AT USA SOFTBALL 14U NATIONALS
Talk about making an impact, Georgia Impact 2023-Lunsford took the USA Softball Class A 14U national title in dramatic fashion on Sunday in Salem, VA.
Mike Lunsford’s Georgia Impact squad got knocked into the loser’s bracket by Corona Angels-FTS on Sunday morning, but fought its way back to the finals where they met up with the Corona Angels once again.
Maci Masters and Kendall Wiley hit two-run homers and Kennedy Harp added a three-run bomb during an eight-run rally in the top of the eighth to help Georgia Impact beat the Corona Angels, 16-8, to force the “If” game in the finals.
Georgia Impact finished off the Corona Angels with a 10-1 victory to claim the national title.
“Since this is our second national championship, a follow up to finishing third at PGF and sixth year finishing in the top 5 at national events, we have discovered it is about combining like-minded kids and parents with a common goal,” Lunsford said. “That goal is to believe in our process of development and accountability, while weeding out ENERGY VAMPIRES. The end result will be determined by the dedication to that process. We have a great group who dealt with the adversity of COVID isolation to rising as national champs.”
For the tournament, Masters batted .543 (19 for 35) with a 2.008 OPS, nine home runs, 24 RBIs and 16 runs scored, Harp hit .500 (15 for 30) with a 1.882 OPS, seven homers, 19 runs scored and 21 RBIs and Katelyn Flanders, the winning pitcher of the championship game, had a 2.44 ERA, 16 Ks in 23 innings and she batted .478 with a 1.060 OPS.
Georgia Impact went 10-1, batted .400 with a 1.127 OPS, 20 HRs and 96 runs scored as a team, while the pitching staff allowed 37 runs in 61 IP and finished with a 2.72 ERA and 1.314 WHIP.
