Tell us about your team/organization and how you became involved with them?
I play for Rock Gold 16U, coached by Johnny Manetta, based out of Ft. Myers, FL. I’m really lucky as most of my travel ball playing has been with variations of this same team. Originally, I played with a different organization, but when I was 11, I was introduced to Coach Manetta. This team has morphed over the years, had different names, etc., but we still have our core group of girls from day one!

We have a really talented, young, 16U team, with most of our girls from 8th to 10th grades. This season, we’ve primarily been playing 18U tournaments — and definitely holding our own! It’s exciting to now be part of the Rock organization, based in the NJ/PA areas and run by Rick Waye … they have one of the best 18U teams in the country! And we’re all working hard to be one of the best 16U teams in the country. Again, I’m so lucky to have these amazing coaches and teammates!

During the stay-at-home orders because of the coronavirus situation what new training methods did you use to stay busy?
Although the coronavirus outbreak put softball to a halt, it opened up so many opportunities for me to improve as an all-around athlete. Because the fields were closed, I focused a lot more time on speed training and building muscle. Some new aspects of speed training that I introduced to my workouts through quarantine included cone and ladder drills that required me to stay low and explosive.

I also did workouts that mainly focused on body weight, which allowed for me to complete a lot of reps, which in turn not only built muscle, but also increased my stamina. These included push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc. I also spent more time stretching during quarantine to help lengthen and strengthen my muscles. I introduced yoga and band work to my daily routine in order to acquire these gains.

Says Mickey, “Without school there is no softball.”

I didn’t always have a workout partner, but I’m very fortunate that I have a batting cage at home, so I was also able to get a lot of tee and machine work in. And my sister — who played professional softball in Taiwan last summer and is my high school coach — and my father, made pretty good workout partners when they were available!

What is something you have faced in your life that has helped you become the person that you are today?
One of the major things that I have faced throughout my life that has made me the person I am today is taking all high-level classes in high school, and learning to balance school with softball, and everything else! Since third grade, I have been challenged to play the sport that I love the most while maintaining my GPA. I have definitely learned that without school there is no softball. Taking high-level classes alongside softball every day of the week has taught me organization, communication, drive … and I’ve learned procrastination doesn’t work!

What’s something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
People might be surprised to know my actual first name is McKenzie. In the softball world, and at home, I’ve always went by Mickey. People might also be surprised to learn that I’m a self-taught expert in pressure points. Yep, I can instantly immobilize you and make you feel like you’ve been hit with a taser! Oh, one other: when I was younger, I played in an all-girl’s national baseball tournament! I love baseball!

Do you have a secret talent/skill?
I can throw a really nasty overhand (and sidearm) curveball!

What was your most memorable (softball) moment of the summer?
Due to the coronavirus, our summer season got moved, and we weren’t even able to practice as a team through most of it. Towards the end of July, we were luckily still able to attend the Junior Olympic Cup in Spartanburg, SC. That was an amazing experience in itself, but afterwards we were able to take a trip to NC as a team and go tubing on one of the local rivers. After not seeing my favorite group of girls and coaches EVER, this was an amazing and memorable way to get back into the groove of things!
