Throwback Thursday: Jayda Coleman’s Amazing—And Scary—Year in 2018

Oklahoma three-time All-American Jayda Coleman continues to amaze as she’s not only had great individual success, but has been a key reason the Sooners have won three straight NCAA DI titles. Photo: OU Softball.

This is Brentt at Extra Inning Softball… one of the best parts of my job is watching young players blossom into standouts at the college level and, sometimes even at the international or pro levels.

I had a chance to watch Jayda Coleman at an event in late 2017 and was privileged to record and publish the two-part interview with her and her parents–wonderful, wonderful people, I might add–in January of 2018.

In these two clips, you’ll get a sense of Jayda’s great personality as well as the strong connection between her and her parents. And Mom, especially, tells some GREAT stories about the much younger Jayda back in the day!

I’ve always felt the current Oklahoma Sooner is a special talent and comes from a great family on and off the softball field… here’s a look back at our two-part interview done more than five years ago which shows that.

Jayda will always be special for us at Extra Inning Softball for a couple of reasons:

  1. she was ranked No. 1 her class,
  2. the article with video clips we posted below originally on Jan. 29, 2018 was one of the very first pieces we did on our then-newly launched site.

The spring before, Jayda had a great sophomore season for her Texas high school and earned 1st Team Extra Inning Softball All-American honors while helping Kevin Shelton’s 18U Texas Glory team have a strong summer as well.

Enjoy…

*****

Considered the top prospect in the 2020 class, Jayda Coleman from The Colony (Texas) had a remarkable year in 2017 as she earned All-American and National Freshman of the Year honors and, best of all, Jayda led her Dallas-area team to a 5A State title playing for her mother, Deana.

She even scored the winning run against her school’s rival coached by her sister, Ashley!

The Texas frosh phenom also played for her father, Cedric, also a well-respected coach who assists in the Texas Glory organization and, in this Extra Inning Exclusive video shot last month at the Texas Faster2First event, Jayda even admits who’s the best coach in the family!

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, however… in December of 2016, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and here we hear about this experience and about the highs and lows of what’s been a thrilling ride for one of the nation’s premier softball players whom Glory Head Coach Kevin Shelton says… “has one of the highest softball I.Q.’s I’ve ever seen and is mentally ahead of most and as physically gifted as any.”
