We’re a week away from it officially being Halloween which means it’s time once again for our traditional Pfeiffer University softball program’s painted pumpkin contest... and, once again, Extra Inning Softball readers get to choose their favorite!
The 7th annual Pfeiffer University Softball Painted Pumpkin Contest has 5 amazingly painted pumpkins and we’re asking YOU to pick the one you like best!
For details on how to vote, please see the bottom of the article!
Every October, the rivalry between the Falcons player groups heats up, in a good way, and the competitive juices get flowing for the outstanding D3 powerhouse softball program based in Misenheimer, North Carolina.

Head Coach Monte Sherrill is one of the most successful college coaches at any level and, in 2023, he completed his eighth season leading the Pfeiffer softball program and now has a career collegiate record of 264-73 (.783).
To put this in perspective, Sherrill’s winning percentage is among the highest of any current Division I, Division II or Division III coach in the nation. Add Sherrill’s unbelievable high school coaching record of 753-60, and you have an overall record of 1017-131 (.886) along with an unbelievable 34 straight titles won at all levels!
And his 2024 team looks rock solid again or, as the longtime coach said to Extra Inning Softball‘s Brentt Eads:
“You might better do a preview of our Pfeiffer team in January because we are loaded ! We won four games this year against the eight teams in the D3 College World Series.”
As we say every year: perhaps the secret to his success could be the great team bonding activities… like this one!
Here are the 2023 entries – both this year’s group and individual works of art – and be sure to vote for your favorite by Sunday (Oct. 29, 2022) at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST by visiting our social media platforms linked at the bottom of the article.

I’ve also enjoyed getting to experience it with different girls each year because we get to bond while having healthy competition. My favorite memory from the contest would be seeing tons of little girls’ faces light up last year when they came to our fall camp and we had them vote in person for their favorite pumpkin. My group won so that was also a plus!”
C – Monopoly 🎃
- Cassidy Brinkley: (Jr.,C)
- Emma Chopko: (Jr.,C)
- Charly Cooper: (Soph., OF)
- Maddie Flinchum: (Fr., IF)
Group Spokesman: Emma Chopko: “Having the Pumpkin Painting Contest is something that allows us to compete against our teammates off the field. It’s a great way to bond with your group while having fun and going up against the rest of the team. Our group chose to do the Monopoly Man because Pfeiffer Softball has never done it before. We love bringing different players into our dorm to play all sorts of games and we knew Monopoly would be a crowd favorite.”
D – Mr. Krabs 🎃
- Gretchen Wolpert (Jr., 1B/C)
- Emily Smith (Fr., OF)
- Alyssa Broaddus (Jr., OF)
- Skylar Price (Jr.,3B)
Group Spokesman: Alyssa Broaddus: “The Pumpkin Painting Contest is a tradition we look forward to every year. We are all very competitive and it is fun to see the creativity and the ideas that everyone puts into these pumpkins. It truly is a bonding experience in a competitive environment. Our group did Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob because it was something all of us enjoyed.”
E – Eeyore 🎃
- Gracie Griffen (Jr., 1B/OF)
- Kali Morton (Sr., RHP)

Group Spokesman: Kali Morton: “Painting pumpkins is something the team looks forward to every year. It’s a joy to have friendly competition and to bond with my teammates. We chose Eeyore while reminiscing on our favorite childhood cartoons. We wanted to paint a pumpkin that would appeal to youngers kids and that older kids could also enjoy. This is my favorite Pfeiffer Softball tradition and everyone did a great job this year!”
