Washington softball legend Ashley Charters was formally inducted into the University of Washington Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday during a ceremony at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Charters was part of an eight-member class that also included Ryan Brown (track & field), Steve Pelluer (football), Cody Pickett (football), Paige Mackenzie (women’s golf), Jim Smith (wrestling), Isaiah Thomas (men’s basketball) and Krista Vansant (volleyball).
The 2023 class left an indelible mark on the hallowed hall of Husky Athletics. These athletes have been the driving force behind numerous national championships throughout the storied history of UW Athletics.
This class features volleyball and men’s basketball players whose jerseys are already hanging in the rafters at Alaska Airlines Arena, two of the most successful quarterbacks to ever play in Husky Stadium, one of the UW’s greatest distance runners, a national college golf phenom, a leader on the 2009 softball national championship team and a college wrestling icon.
Charters helped lead Washington to the only national championship in school history in 2009.
A four-year letterwinner from Beaverton, Ore., Charters capped her brilliant career at Washington by becoming the program’s fifth-ever three-time All-America (2006-07, 2009) while also being named a three-time All-Pacific-Region and four-time All-Pac-10 honoree.
In addition to winning the national championship in 2009, Charters helped lead the Huskies to the Women’s College World Series in 2007. She earned WCWS All-Tournament honors in both 2007 and 2009.
She finished her career with a UW record with 133 stolen bases and she ranks third all-time in hits (315) and second in batting average (.396).
Following her career at Washington, she went on to play two years with Team USA Softball (2009-10) before playing in the National Fastpitch League from 2011-13.
The Husky Hall of Fame was created in 1979 and, in recent years, has named a new class every other year. The previous class in 2021 was highlighted by the “1969 – The Five Who Dared” when four Washington football players and one assistant coach, who, amid the social turbulence of the late 1960s, used their voice and their platform to protest racial injustice.
Each selection year, the Tyee Club solicits Husky Hall of Fame nominations from the public. For 2023 the selection committee, the members of which reviewed all nominees and collectively chose the new class of inductees, consisted of two Husky Hall of Fame members – Sonny Sixkiller (football) and Danielle Lawrie (softball) – athletic department staffers Erin O’Connell, Chip Lydum, and Jeff Bechthold; and Hall of Fame curator Dave Torrell.
