Dawna Tyson, the youngest daughter of Corona Angels founder Marty Tyson, will be taking the reins of Corona Angels-Tyson ’06, one of Southern California’s top travel ball teams, for the 2019/2020 season as the team moves up to 14U this fall the organization announced on Monday.

Tyson played her college ball at the University of Nebraska where she was a four-year letter winner, helping lead the Cornhuskers to the Women’s College World Series as a freshman in 2013 and a Big Ten regular season championship in 2014.

She was also a graduate assistant coach at Delaware State and has assisted various Corona Angels teams in all age groups over the past few years including last year’s 14U PGF National Championship Corona Angels team.

“Dawna Tyson will bring an exciting and positive vibe to a team that is already stacked with talent,” a spokesman for the Angels said.

Corona Angels-Tyson ’06 won two prestigious tournaments this past season in 12U against some of the best teams in Southern California, defeating top teams such as Power Surge-Berndes, I-5 Softball 12U North, Suncats Natividad/Lee, So Cal A’s-Terrones and Explosion-Denio.

The Angels won the TCS April’s Finest this spring.

Tyson will hold tryouts this weekend in Norco and Corona, California to compete with other top first year 14’s this season.

“My goal is to find gritty players who fit the Corona Angels style of play,” she said. “I want to build a team of strong women through competition, who are proud of themselves and are willing to show it off in a positive way”

She stressed that the team will have energy and passion, as is typical in all teams in the Corona Angels program.

“This team will be like a family—expect all kinds of swagger, and you will definitely know you are playing against the Corona Angels,” she added.

Her father will also be keeping a close eye on the team and will be holding joint practices with his 9th grade team consistently throughout the season and, according to Dawna,  will personally coach the ’06 team when his 9th graders go dark for high school ball later in the season.
