National rankings are about more than statistics. From tournament strength and composite scoring to athlete video and verified performance data, Extra Inning Softball is taking a deeper approach to evaluating the nation’s fastpitch talent.
When two elite softball players have nearly identical statistics, how do you determine who deserves the higher ranking?
Is a .500 batting average against nationally recognized pitching more impressive than a .650 average against local competition? Should an athlete competing two age divisions above her graduation class receive additional consideration? And how much should one outstanding national tournament influence an athlete’s overall placement?

These are the types of questions the Extra Inning Softball Rankings Committee considers throughout the evaluation process.
As the number of athletes being evaluated continues to grow, so does the importance of looking beyond traditional statistics.
The goal isn’t simply to identify impressive numbers. It’s to understand the competition, circumstances, and complete body of work behind those numbers.

Not All Statistics Tell the Same Story
A batting average is an important measurement of offensive production, but it doesn’t always reveal the complete picture.
Consider two hypothetical athletes.
One hits .550 while competing primarily in local tournaments against opponents in her own age division.
Another hits .450 while playing above her age division against nationally competitive programs featuring elite pitching.
Which performance is more impressive?
The answer requires more than comparing batting averages.
Extra Inning Softball evaluates several factors, including strength of competition, age division, tournament participation, positional ability, athleticism, and statistical performance.
An athlete’s numbers matter, but so does the environment in which those numbers were produced.
This distinction becomes particularly important when separating the nation’s highest-performing athletes, where even small differences in evaluation can influence individual placements.

A Closer Look at Tournament Strength
One aspect of the Extra Inning Softball rankings process that many families may not realize is that the Rankings Committee has internally evaluated and ranked regional and national tournaments.
This system helps provide context for the level of competition athletes encounter throughout their seasons.
Major national events, highly competitive showcases, and regional tournaments can present different levels of competition. Understanding those differences helps the committee assess an athlete’s performance more accurately.
Rather than treating every tournament appearance as equal, the evaluation process considers the competitive environment in which athletes perform.
That information contributes to an athlete’s composite evaluation score, which is heavily weighted alongside statistical performance over the past year.
The result is a more comprehensive evaluation that looks beyond individual numbers to better understand the athlete producing them.

One Tournament Isn’t the Entire Story
An athlete who hits .600 at a major national championship has certainly accomplished something noteworthy.
But should that performance outweigh an entire season of results?
Not necessarily.
Individual tournaments can provide valuable evidence of an athlete’s ability to perform against elite competition. However, Extra Inning Softball also considers consistency, development, and overall performance across a broader evaluation period.
A player who delivers outstanding results at one event may demonstrate tremendous potential. Another who consistently performs against strong competition throughout the year may present an equally compelling case.
Both deserve consideration.
The challenge is determining how those performances fit into each athlete’s complete body of work.
This is why the Rankings Committee places significant emphasis on comprehensive evaluations rather than isolated statistical achievements.

MyEIS360™ Is an Important Part of the Process
Statistics provide valuable information, but they cannot capture everything about an athlete.
That’s one of the primary reasons Extra Inning Softball developed MyEIS360™ athlete profiles.

These profiles allow athletes to provide additional information that supports a more comprehensive understanding of their abilities and development.
Through MyEIS360, athletes can showcase their accomplishments, measurables, schedules, rankings, videos, and other information in one centralized location.
One particularly valuable feature is My Media Vault, where athletes can upload multiple videos showcasing different aspects of their game.
For example, a hitter’s batting average may demonstrate consistent offensive production, but video can provide additional insight into her swing mechanics, plate approach, ability to drive the ball, and use of different parts of the field.
For pitchers, catchers, and defensive players, video can offer important context that statistics alone may not provide.
While uploading videos does not guarantee a particular ranking, maintaining a detailed and updated MyEIS360 profile gives the Rankings Committee additional information to consider during future evaluations.
It also provides college coaches with a centralized resource to learn more about an athlete.
The more complete an athlete’s profile, the more information is available to support a well-informed evaluation.

EIS Doesn’t Rely on One Statistical Platform
Another important consideration is how athlete statistics are collected and verified.
Travel softball organizations use different statistical platforms, including GameChanger and AthletesGoLive.
While these systems can provide useful performance data, not every athlete has a choice in which platform her team uses.
Giving one platform an automatic advantage could unfairly penalize athletes whose organizations use another system.
For that reason, Extra Inning Softball does not automatically favor one statistical provider over another.
Instead, the committee evaluates available information through a broader research and verification process.
Maintaining fairness across athletes, teams, organizations, and geographic regions remains a central priority.

Could Advanced Analytics Play a Bigger Role?
As technology continues to evolve, additional evaluation tools may create new opportunities.
Spray charts, for example, can provide useful information about where hitters consistently place the ball.
For pure hitters, this information could offer additional insight into offensive versatility and the ability to use the entire field.
Similarly, detailed tournament-specific statistics could help identify athletes who consistently perform against elite pitching.
However, incorporating these tools into a national rankings system presents a significant challenge.
Not every family or organization has access to the same data. Some athletes have extensive statistical records and advanced analytics, while others have limited information available.
With more than 1,000 athletes under consideration during every rankings period, applying highly specialized data requirements consistently would require substantial resources.
The Rankings Committee must balance the potential value of advanced analytics with the need for fairness, accessibility, and reliable verification.
As the platform grows, these tools may offer opportunities for further refinement.
The Methodology Behind the Rankings
Extra Inning Softball’s evaluation process is guided by its proprietary SERV™ methodology: Software, Evaluate, Research, Verify.
Software: Organizes and analyzes athlete information, including statistics, tournament participation, achievements, and other submitted data.
Evaluate: Examines positional ability, athleticism, offensive and defensive impact, competition level, measurables, and overall performance.
Research: Reviews an athlete’s broader body of work, development, accomplishments, and supporting information.
Verify: Provides a final review of available information before rankings are published.
SERV™ was developed to create a more structured and comprehensive approach to identifying talent while reducing reliance on name recognition or reputation alone.
It also continues to evolve as Extra Inning Softball expands its evaluation resources and receives feedback from the softball community.

The Bigger Picture: Recognition With Meaning
Rankings will always generate discussion.
Parents, coaches, and athletes naturally want to understand how placements are determined, particularly when talented players are separated by only a few positions.
Those conversations are valuable.
They create opportunities to explain the evaluation process, identify areas for improvement, and help families better understand what rankings represent.
Extra Inning Softball recognizes that no evaluation system is perfect. However, the organization has made significant strides in developing a detailed process that considers far more than traditional statistics.
From internally evaluating tournament strength to developing composite scores and expanding the information available through MyEIS360™, the objective remains consistent:
Recognize athletes through a fair, credible, and increasingly comprehensive evaluation process.
As participation continues to grow, Extra Inning Softball remains committed to sharing more information about its methodology and helping families understand how rankings are determined.
Because ultimately, a meaningful ranking should represent more than a number.
It should reflect the research, evaluation, and consideration behind the athlete who earned it.
