After spending numerous years as successful head coaches with the OC Batbusters and the So Cal Athletics, Ken and Roseann Briggs are starting their own travel softball club, the husband and wife announced Monday evening.
The BSC (Briggs Softball Club) Bengals will begin the 2021-22 season with seven teams: two at the 18U level, three at 16U, and two at 14U.
Ken and Roseann told Extra Inning Softball:
“We will coach the Briggs 18U team, but typically spend the weekends moving locations to attend all games played by the 16U and 14U teams as well.”
And the pair also say they will train all the Briggs teams.
Several of the squads that will be Bengals’ teams next season are already having successful summers this year:
- The Briggs 16U team is at the Alliance Championship Series following an impressive 3rd place finish at TCS/USA Nationals.
- The Briggs 18U team is currently playing at PGF Premier Nationals and Chris Wellbaum’s 16U team—set to move up to 18U next season—is at PGF Premier Nationals as is the 14U Briggs Team which is ranked 19th in the nation.
- The duo says that perhaps the strongest team at this point could be the 12I Fitzpatrick/Briggs team, which, Ken says: “Features a host of top players, including two pitchers already hitting 60 mph from 43 feet.”
One of the new features the leaders of Briggs Softball say they’re most excited about is an annual scholarship to be given to one or more seniors to help offset college costs. This year, two seniors will receive scholarships of $10,000 each after applying and writing essays explaining how softball helped prepare them for college.
Ken and Roseann add, “We look forward to helping many more Bengals in the years to come.”
They’ve already helped their daughter, Ciara, get a great start in her college career: this season the true freshman started all 57 for LSU in left field and earned All-SEC Newcomer Team honors after hitting .339 with 49 runs scored and was 11-for-12 in steals.
In addition, the Briggs would like to thank some heavyweight club coaches who helped them get to this point.
“We would also like to say thank you to Bruce Richardson for allowing us to coach in his organization for the past six years!” Ken concludes. “Bruce and Jess Martinson have been a big part of our growth and we couldn’t do this without their full support!”
