One of the top college preseason tournaments is the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic which is a great follow-up to the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational that took place last week and had 12 Top 25 teams competing including current #1 UCLA.

This week, 4 of the Top 5 teams in the nation have competed n Cathedral City, California, as well as 5 of the Top 10 and 9 of the Top 25 according to the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll.

Taking in the field in Southern California’s Palm Springs -rea have been #1 UCLA, #2 Washington, #3 Oklahoma, #5 Arizona, #9 Florida, #16 Arizona State, #17 Oregon, #19 Missouri and #24 Virginia Tech.

Having beaten Auburn 11-1 in 5 innings Sunday morning behind Holly Azevedo‘s complete game performance, UCLA looks certain to remain as the #1 team in the country in this week’s rankings, but it hasn’t come easily.

The Bruins made it to the top of the ratings last week after squeaking by Florida State on Sunday in a classic match-up of Top 5 teams in Clearwater Florida. UCLA took it down to their last out before a two-run double by Aaliyah Jordan put the defending NCAA DI champs on top 3-2.

This week UCLA once again made its fans nervous, but satisfied, with similar-type thrillers including a pair of eight-inning nail-biters on Saturday (the only two of the 25 games to go extra innings). The team is now 14-0 heading into an early game against Auburn and an exhibition contest versus Team USA.

In a game featuring two Top 10 teams, #1 UCLA beat #9 Florida with an exciting 8th inning as outfielder Kelli Godin turned an inning-ending double play by making a catch in left field for out number two and throwing out the runner at home to keep the score tied at 4-4. UCLA won in the bottom of the inning when Anna Vines started at second, moved to third on an Alyssa Garcia sac bunt and came home on a wild pitch.

Earlier in the day, UCLA won on a walk-off two-run home by grad transfer Jenavee Peres to beat Wisconsin 3-1. The Bruins trailed 1-0 before tying the game in the bottom of the  5th inning leading to Aaliyah Jordan doubling in Kinsley Washington for the game winner in the 8th.

Pitcher Megan Faraimo threw 13.2 innings for the day with 26 K’s to help the Pac-12 team stay unbeaten.

#2 Washington had a tight game on Friday as the Huskies had to come from three runs down before winning on a walk-off two-run homer y outstanding freshman Kelley Lynch.

But that certainly wasn’t the case on Saturday.

Washington, which was a preseason #1 in one national pool, looked very strong despite the absence of All-American Sis Bates, who is still going through concussion protocols and was ruled out for the weekend at Mary Nutter. Coach Heather Tarr’s team reached double digits in both games with a 12-2 win over #3 Oklahoma and a 10-2 six inning victory against Wisconsin.

In the surprisingly dominate win over Oklahoma, Washington hit three home runs in the first two innings and four overall including a pair by Baylee Klingler who went 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs. Kelley Lynch started in the win and Gabbie Plain finished with two perfect innings.

Oklahoma also lost on Sunday morning, 4-3, to Wisconsin, to run its record to 11-3 and will likely drop in the polls.

Arizona, the #5 team, won its only game on Saturday—2-0 over Auburn— after having lost to #9 Florida on Friday 3-2. The Wildcats have two losses from the weekend, the other coming to Texas A&M on Thursday and aren’t scheduled to play on Sunday.

Florida entered this weekend’s games at #9 and also has a pair of losses so far at Mary Nutter. The Gators lost on Thursday to Texas A&M as well as the tough loss to UCLA on Saturday. The SEC power has one game on Sunday, against Nebraska.

Here are the results and the final games to be played today starting with the first five at 9 am Pacific Time.
