George Washington’s Jenna Cone captures Player of the Week accolades with record-setting week at the plate

After leading George Washington at the plate resulting in a perfect 7-0 outing on the week, junior Jenna Cone (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) has claimed Week 5 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week honors.

Announced today by USA Softball, Cone recorded at least one hit, run and RBI in all seven games, highlighted by three three-hit efforts.

“My mentality in the box is to hit the ball hard to produce for my team,” said Cone. “In the end, it’s the wins that matter, and I’m glad to contribute to the team’s success. We work really hard, and we know what we’re capable of. It’s really exciting to see it come full circle, and I hope we carry it forward throughout the games we have ahead.”

In George Washington’s doubleheader against Howard, Cone had three hits and three RBI and continued her hot-hitting streak at the Colonial Classic. In the first four contests, Cone hit 8-for-12 and collected 10 RBI with four home runs. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native capped off the tournament with a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning of a 5-4 victory over Manhattan, making her George Washington’s career home run leader with 37.

“I’m proud of Jenna for this national recognition,” said Head Coach Shane Winkler. “She continues to work hard to improve at the plate, even after all of the success she’s had during her career here. We have a very strong offense around Jenna, so other teams are forced to pitch to her. She is off to an amazing start this year, and she is continuing to get even better.”

For the week, Cone hit 14-for-22 with five home runs and three doubles, good for a 1.455 slugging percentage. She also posted 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. This is the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for Jenna Cone and George Washington. Cone was also awarded the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award for the second time this season and fifth time in her career for her performance.
