Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF), the Huntington Beach-based events company that produces the nationals considered the pinnacle of the summer club softball season, the PGF Nationals, announced on Monday that the 2020 National Championships are expected to take place as scheduled.
“We fully expect to hold our PGF 2020 National Championships in Southern California, as scheduled this summer,” the company wrote in a release.”We have been in constant communication with our local municipalities and they have every intention of allowing us to use the fields.”
Additionally, a list of National and Regional Qualifiers was updated to include those cancelled, rescheduled or set to play as scheduled. “Most all of our June National Qualifiers should be played as scheduled,” the release added.
With the prestigious PGF Nationals still set as planned–18U and 16U age divisions for July 24-August 1 and 14U, 12U and 10U for August 2-August 9 along with the highly-success PGF All-American Game set for August 1–it remains to be seen how the COVID-19 pandemic will impact how the games are run and even which organizations nationwide will send teams.
On Monday, a group of Texas teams announced a new event series called the Texas FastPitch League (TFL) which will have many top organizations in the state playing events locally or within driving distance and bypassing events such as Nationals and showcases like those in Colorado.
The PGF release also stated that a “modified version” of its nationals could happen (“social distancing, hand sanitizing, etc.”) while emphasizing the “game will still be played the way it was meant to be played.”
