Alexandra Salter was no secret in the softball world heading into the PGF 18U Premier Nationals this past summer, but her performance to lead Georgia Impact-Lewis to the championship game for the second straight year helped elevate her to another level as one of the most dominant pitchers in the nation.
Salter has been described as a ferocious “competitor” that would “pitch with her fingers bleeding if we let her.”
“Alex is such a special player and it’s been a privilege to play with her,” said Ali Newland, who was a teammate of Salter’s with the Georgia Impact before moving on to LSU.
“First off, she’s got amazing stuff. Her curveball is one of the best I’ve seen and with a screwball to the other side of the plate … when you’re down in the count, it’s almost unfair. In addition, she’s got a great riseball that I’ve watched the best in the country wave at and a change-up she has worked so hard on that just falls off the table.
“But wicked movement aside, Alex is just a phenomenal teammate. She’s a rock in the circle and you’ll never see her flustered. Being an infielder behind her, no matter the situation I always feel like she has it. Every time. I’m lucky to get to play with her, but luckier still to have gotten closer with her and call her a friend. I can’t wait to see the amazing things she’ll do, but I can definitely wait to face her in the SEC.”
Vivian Ponn, a former rival of Salter’s at Fort Myers High, Florida, who is currently playing at South Florida, has huge respect for the future Alabama hurler.
“Alex has a great skill-set,” Ponn said. “She is a great pitcher for the Georgia Impact. She led them through the summer and performed very well. She is a big asset on their team.”
Ashley Montoya, currently at Lipscomb University, is another former rival of Salter’s that gives the Floridian mad props.
“Alex Salter is a pitcher that commands the circle with an unfettered work ethic, competitive and poised reputation,” Montoya said. “It’s these traits that make her extremely valuable to the Georgia Impact franchise. She has the ability to mix her spins and speeds through the zone, consistently keeping batters off rhythm and confused.”
“With sound pitching mechanics and ball velocity in the mid 60s, it’s hard to adjust to the variety of pitches that she offers to batters. When she is not in the circle, she also has the ability to drive the ball gap to gap (hitting). It is rare to find a player that can hit with power and command the circle like Alex does. The Georgia impact has found a true leader with the ability to consistently represent an organization both on and off the field.”
