For many softball players in the Class of 2028, September 1 has been circled on the calendar for months.
It is a date surrounded by anticipation, excitement and plenty of pressure. Players may wake up wondering whether their phone will ring, whether a college coach will reach out and whether all the work they have put into the recruiting process will finally result in “the call.”
At Extra Inning Softball, we want every athlete to remember something important as September 1 arrives: one day does not define your recruiting journey.
September 1 Is a Starting Line, Not a Finish Line
Some players will receive calls. Some may receive several. Social media will quickly fill with posts about conversations, recruiting interest and exciting opportunities. Those moments deserve to be celebrated.
But there will also be talented, hardworking and completely recruitable athletes whose phones remain quiet.
If that is you, do not mistake silence for rejection.
September 1 represents the beginning of another phase of the recruiting process—not the end of it. College programs have different needs, timelines, roster situations and recruiting boards.
Coaches may prioritize certain positions first. They may still be evaluating athletes or waiting to see additional fall performances.
There are countless conversations and decisions happening behind the scenes that an athlete cannot see.
Your Phone Does Not Determine Your Value
Recruiting can make athletes feel as though every email, ranking, conversation and phone call is measuring their worth.
It is not.
Your ability as a softball player did not suddenly change at midnight on September 1. Your work ethic did not disappear. Your accomplishments still matter. The teammate, student and person you have become throughout this process remains exactly the same.
A phone call is an opportunity. It is not a validation of your value.
Do Not Let Social Media Become Your Scoreboard
September 1 can become especially difficult when athletes begin watching what everyone else is posting.
You may see another player share that she received multiple calls while you received none. A teammate may hear from a program you hoped would contact you. Your feed may suddenly make it appear as though everyone is moving forward except you.
They aren’t.
Social media shows moments. It does not show an entire recruiting journey.
It is completely understandable to feel disappointed when something you hoped for does not happen. Allow yourself to feel that disappointment, but do not allow it to convince you that your opportunity is gone.
Keep Giving Coaches Reasons to Notice You
What happens after September 1 matters.
Continue communicating with programs. Keep sending schedules, updated video, academic information and meaningful performance results. Continue attending camps strategically and pursuing schools where there is genuine mutual fit.
Most importantly, keep developing.
The player you are on September 1 does not have to be the player you are three months from now. Fall softball provides another opportunity to compete, improve and give college coaches something new to evaluate.
Recruiting boards change. Roster needs change. Players commit. Positions open. New athletes emerge.
Stay ready when your opportunity arrives.
Your Timeline Is Your Timeline
There is no trophy for being recruited first.
The right opportunity in October, November or beyond is worth far more than the wrong opportunity on September 1.
Recruiting is not a race to see who can receive attention the fastest. The goal is to find a college where you can succeed academically, athletically and personally.
At Extra Inning Softball, we have watched recruiting journeys unfold in many different ways. There is no single timeline that determines whether an athlete’s journey will ultimately be successful.
So when September 1 arrives, enjoy the excitement. Answer the phone if it rings. Ask questions. Be grateful for every opportunity.
And if it doesn’t ring?
Wake up September 2 and keep working.
