As we gear up for the March 30 launch of the updated 2022 Extra Elite 100, we’re going to profile top candidates and today go to the Southwest to learn more about a Pac-12-committed infielder…
The multi-talented Viviana Martinez has won two flag football national championships, but where she truly shines is on the softball diamond.
The Texas-committed sophomore is known for her slick defensive skills and cannon-like glove at shortstop and the lefty speedster can be extremely deadly at the plate with her ability to drop down a bunt or knock one out of the park.
Marshall-committed 2021 P McKenna “Bub” Feringa said Martinez, a Top 10 honoree in last year’s 2022 Extra Elite 100, has the kind of glove at shortstop that can save her bacon in many tight situations.
“Vivi is so fun to be around,” Feringa said. “She keeps everything light and fun. She makes plays most shortstops don’t and that gives me confidence, being a pitcher, knowing that she’s going to make the play. She’s a bacon saver (laughs). She is such a good hitter also. She can bunt for a hit and is able to go yard at any time. Everything she does is quick. I’ve played with her since 10U and she’s team player. I can’t wait to play with her this summer because it’s going to be something special.”
Washington-committed MIF Rylee Holtorf said Martinez is the kind of player that makes her teammates better.
“Viv is a player that every girl wants on their team and that every girl wants to play next too,” said Holtorf, a Top 5 player in the 2021 Extra Elite 100. “I’ve been lucky enough to get to play up the middle with her and compete alongside of her. Vivi’s ability to make the difficult plays look easy, her perfect footwork and her cannon across the field, leave anyone who watches her in awe of the way she plays.”
“She is unique because of her composure on the field,” Holtorf continues. “Viv competes in the box and is a hard out to get, especially with her speed. On the field she has so much swag and plays free, which allows her to be the player she is. Playing with Vivi pushes me to get better every practice and we always have fun competing together.”
