Jamie Wang of McLean, Virginia and a Class of 2019 grad from the National Cathedral School, a private girls school located on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., may be the most overall talented player we’ve come across this year.
And we’re not just talking about softball… or sports, even.
When you factor in academics, artistry and everything in her portfolio (literally), you have quite the accomplished young student-athlete who could go a myriad of ways in her career–athletic or otherwise.
Jamie was named as the Gatorade D.C. Softball Player of the Year a month ago after helping lead her high school softball team to four straight District of Columbia State Athletic Association softball championships.
A versatile athlete who has pitched and played catcher and shortstop in her four-years as a starter for the Eagles, she also was on the school’s varsity volleyball, basketball and even squash teams.
On the softball field as a senior, Jamie went 10-4 with a 1.79 ERA and recorded 181 strikeouts in 104 innings.
At the plate, she compiled a batting average of .560 and drive in 22 runs in 16 games to produce an impressive OPS of 1.567.
Jamie’s softball history goes back over a decade as she also competed for the McLean Little League All-Star team that finished second in the 2013 Little League World Series.
In addition, the accomplished softball player has competed in club ball for 10 years and served as co-captain for seven teams.
But softball success is just one aspect of this amazing student-athlete’s resume of accomplishments.
She is headed to the University of Pennsylvania as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar where she plans on majoring in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science to develop safer sports equipment and other life-saving technologies.
This spring, she won the Math Award at graduation and three scholarships for scholar-athlete and character as the talented teen finished high school with a GPA of 4.44.
That’s not all, however… Jamie is an accomplished writer, photographer and designer who has won multiple national and regional academic awards, 37 art awards, and seven character awards.
“I’ve been able to infuse my love of sports into many aspects of my life,” Wang told Ryan McFadden of Inside The Locker Room.
“To combine my interests in sports, art, and writing, I volunteer and design logos for sports organizations such as Little League, USSSA and NFCA and nonprofits UNESCO and Community Empowerment. I have designed over 20 pins, banners, program covers, and scarves and took photos for the Washington Nationals Baseball Academy website.”
Will she continue being a student-athlete at the next level?
“I don’t know at what level I will play softball,” Jamie states, “but I would like to participate in as many club and intramural teams as I can manage for softball, volleyball, squash, basketball, and maybe a brand new sport.”
Here are a few samples from her photography and design portfolios, including ceramics and logos she’s designed, several of which have been turned into trading pins…
