Liberty Makes History with Unbelievable Upset

Liberty University pulled off an unbelievable upset on Sunday night, defeating No. 1 seed Texas A&M 6-5 to punch their ticket to the Super Regionals for the first time in program history. The winner-take-all game capped off an emotional doubleheader in the NCAA Bryan-College Station Regional, held at Davis Diamond in College Station, Texas. With this victory, Liberty becomes the first team ever to eliminate the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed during regional play since the NCAA began seeding in 2005.

This team spotlight recaps Liberty’s historic run through the regionals, the high-stakes action of the final showdown, and what this means for the Flames moving forward. Liberty’s Breakthrough Weekend

Liberty University entered the 2025 NCAA tournament with a 49-13 record and a fearless mindset. The Flames opened the weekend with an 8-5 win over Texas A&M on Friday, stunning the top-seeded Aggies. Fueled by timely hitting and aggressive base running, Liberty delivered a statement performance in Game 1 and moved into the winner’s bracket.

But the Aggies weren’t going down quietly. After eliminating Marist with a 17-4 win, Texas A&M fought off elimination again by outlasting Liberty 14-11 in an extra-inning slugfest on Sunday afternoon. A&M used a 9-run explosion in the 7th inning and a walk-off single in the 8th to force a decisive Game 7. Momentum seemed to be back in the Aggies’ favor—until Liberty flipped the script one more time.

High-Stakes Finale

Liberty wasted no time setting the tone in the final game. In the top of the first inning, Rachel Roupe crushed a solo home run to right field, giving the Flames a quick 1-0 lead. By the second inning, Liberty extended its lead to 4-0 behind clutch two-out hitting from KK Madrey and Savannah Woodard, both of whom drove in key runs.

Texas A&M answered in the bottom of the third. The Aggies then pulled within one in the fourth, but Savannah Woodard delivered again for Liberty with an RBI single in the fifth, pushing the lead to 5-3.

A&M kept the pressure on, making it 6-5 in the sixth after back-to-back RBI singles. But Liberty refused to let history slip through its fingers.

Clutch Pitching and Defense

Liberty’s pitching staff faced relentless pressure from a high-powered Texas A&M offense, especially in the late innings. After the starting pitcher managed to hold the Aggies at bay through the early frames, a reliever entered to close things out with two high-stress innings.

In the seventh, Liberty retired the side in order to seal the win. With the tying run at the plate more than once, it was a sharp ground ball and a flawless throw on the final play that preserved Liberty’s biggest victory in program history. In the end, Elena Escobar got the win and Kaylan Yoder got the save for Liberty.

A Historic First: Liberty Advances

The 6-5 win doesn’t just mark Liberty’s first trip to the Super Regionals—it also snaps a 20-year streak in NCAA tournament history. Since national seeding began in 2005, no No. 1 overall seed had ever failed to advance to the Super Regionals—until now.

With this landmark win, Liberty has established itself as one of the top storylines of the 2025 NCAA postseason. The Flames will now face the winner of the Eugene Regional in next weekend’s Super Regional series, just two wins away from a spot in the Women’s College World Series.
