NCAA Eyes Major Eligibility Shift: What the New “5-for-5” Rule Could Mean for Softball

At Extra Inning Softball, the landscape of college athletics is once again on the verge of a major shift.

The NCAA Division I Cabinet is expected to meet May 22 to review and potentially approve emergency legislation introducing a new “5-for-5” eligibility model—one that could redefine how college careers are structured beginning with the 2026–27 academic year.

If passed, the rule would grant student-athletes five years to compete in five full seasons, replacing the current structure of four seasons within a five-year window.
