Softball News: NFCA Issues Statement on Postseason Player & Coach Awards

The following information was released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) today…

Due to continued development of COVID-19 and the effect it has had on the sports landscape, the NFCA is providing an update on all of its 2020 awards for both coaches and student-athletes.

The Association’s primary goal is to protect the integrity of these awards. Please see the summary for all NFCA awards and scholarships that will and will not be presented in 2020.

* College:
All-Region, All-American, Regional/National Coaching Staff of the Year, Easton/NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year, New Balance/NFCA Golden Shoe, Diamond/NFCA Catcher of the Year, Schutt Sports/NFCA Player, Pitcher, & Freshman of the Year:
For student-athlete athletic awards, there were not enough games played and therefore not enough body of work to fairly evaluate athletes. These same principles apply for the coaching awards.

* High School:
At this point in time, All-Region and All-American awards could still be awarded for high school players since many high school associations across the country have not made a final decision on whether student-athlete play will resume or not. The NFCA will update high school coaches accordingly as COVID-19 continues to develop.

* Academic Awards:
Many universities, colleges, and high schools have moved to a pass/fail system, rather than award letter grades for the spring semester or quarter. In order to maintain year-to-year consistency of these prestigious academic awards, the Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Award and Top 10 Academic Teams will not be given for the 2019-2020 academic year.
