EXTRA INNING SCOUTING REPORT

With the 2020 high school softball season approaching, TLI will be taking a look at some of the top teams in the country with the Extra Inning Scouting Report.

TLI talked to Marina High of Huntington Beach, CA, co-coach Dan Hay about his Vikings, who went 16-9 and won a share of the Sunset League title before a first-round exit in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Let’s get to the Extra Inning Scouting Report of …

MARINA

Top Returners:

  • Emily Rush (2020, P/3B, 1st Team All-Sunset League, 1st Team All-County 1st Team)
  • Taylor Lane (2021, 2B)
  • Emily Farlin (2021, P)
  • Jacey Henderson (2020, C)

Top Newcomers:

  • Anaya Togia (2023, P)
  • Makayla Mathis (2023, CF)
  • Ariana Magallanes (2023, 1B/3B)

What will it take for your team to be successful this season? We should be very successful this year with returning standouts and three incoming freshman that will be front-line starters.

Who is your No. 1 pitcher and what can you tell me about her skills? Who else could see some time in the circle? Emily Rush will be the #1 pitcher in the circle once again. She pitched the team to a League Championships in 2019 and hit over .400. Anaya Togia (Corona Angels) will see a lot of time in the circle as a back-up to Emily and will also get her share of starts.

What can we expect from your offense? Our offense should be very strong this year, especially with the talent of our incoming freshman.

Did you pick up any impact transfers or did you lose any players to transfers? No.

Who are the potential All-Section/All-District/All-State players on your team? Emily Rush, Taylor Lane, Anaya Togia and Makayla Mathis.

Signed and Committed Players: Emily Rush – Cypress JC; Paige Shafer, Cypress JC; Emily Farlin, Akron; and Jacey Henderson, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
