NORCO SURVIVES
Kyleigh Sand’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave Norco High, CA, #2 in the nation in the Extra Elite Eighty High School Rankings, a 5-4 win over Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, CA, at the Norco Varsity Softball Showcase on Thursday night at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills, CA.
Freshman Mya Perez smashed a pinch-hit, three-run homer and freshman Alyssa Hovermale added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to help the Cougars, the two-time defedning CIF-Southern Section Division 1 champion, build a 4-1 lead.
The Monarchs didn’t go quietly, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth off Washington-bound Sarah Willis to tie it, 4-4. Oregon-commit Stevie Hansen came in to quell the threat. Norco improved to 5-0.
“It’s a new team,” Norco coach Rick Robinson told the Orange County Register. “We lose two big bats (from last season in Kinzie Hansen and Paige Smith) and people got to step up in those spots. And we wanted to see what they could and couldn’t do, and I think we saw it.”
