How 2026 Rylee Barnett Honors Lucy Weber’s Legacy Through Impactful Service
Giving back to the community is something that holds a special place in my heart. My name is Rylee Barnett, and as a 2026 graduate at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, I’ve always believed in the power of kindness and service. I play competitive softball for Top Gun 26/27 KC, but outside of the diamond, my focus is on honoring the memory of Lucy Weber through her organization, Lucy’s Kids for Peace.
Though I never had the chance to meet Lucy, her legacy lives on through acts of service that spread love, kindness, and support to those in need. In this article, I’ll share the meaningful community projects I’ve been a part of and how these efforts continue to honor Lucy’s incredible life and spirit.
Who Was Lucy Weber?
Lucy Weber was the younger sister of my classmate Lily. Sadly, Lucy passed away in 2010 from brain cancer when she was just 17 months old. Though I never had the chance to meet Lucy, I was inspired to get involved with Lucy’s Kids for Peace, an organization that continues to honor her memory. This organization is committed to spreading kindness, giving back to the community, and keeping Lucy’s legacy alive.
Lucy’s Kids for Peace has grown over the years, helping families and children in need while encouraging kindness and generosity. I first became involved through my best friend and teammate, Cadence Dearing, as well as several other friends and classmates. It has been a life-changing experience to be a part of something so meaningful.
The Thanksgiving Basket Project
One of the most impactful projects I participated in was the Thanksgiving basket project. This initiative aimed to provide families in need with everything they would need to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. Being a part of this project was a fast and simple way to give back to the community and make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
The satisfaction of delivering a meal that brought families together during such an important time of the year was an unforgettable experience. This project helped me realize how little acts of kindness can create ripples that have a lasting impact on others. It was heartwarming to see the joy and appreciation of the families who received the baskets.
The Bedtime Project: Spreading Joy
Another project I’ve been fortunate to be involved with is the Bedtime Project. I had the opportunity to shop for two boys who were part of the program. After picking out items from their Christmas lists, I couldn’t wait to see their faces light up when they opened their gifts. The act of picking out something special for a child in need was incredibly fulfilling.
A week later, we gathered at the T-Mobile Center to wrap gifts for 90 children. The excitement in the room was contagious as we worked together to make sure each child received a personalized gift. Later, we hosted a PJ party filled with games and activities where the kids could enjoy their new gifts and experience the joy of the holiday season. Watching the children’s smiles as they opened their presents made all the effort worth it.
How Giving Back Honors Lucy’s Legacy
Each of these community service projects has shown me how powerful it can be to spread kindness. I am deeply proud to be part of Lucy’s Kids for Peace, which continues to honor Lucy Weber’s legacy. Her life, though short, has inspired so many to give back to the community and make the world a better place.
Participating in these projects reminds me of how important it is to keep her memory alive through our actions. Whether it’s through Thanksgiving baskets, holiday gifts, or simply lending a helping hand, every small act of kindness makes a huge difference.
I may never have met Lucy, but through my involvement in Lucy’s Kids for Peace, I’ve come to feel a deep connection to her and her family. Her legacy is about kindness, compassion, and making the world a better place for those in need. Through my work with this organization, I hope to continue spreading her message of love and service.
Conclusion: Continuing Lucy’s Legacy Through Service
Being involved in Lucy’s Kids for Peace has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am grateful to be part of a community that is committed to making a difference. Every project I participate in reminds me of the importance of kindness, and how quickly one act can change someone’s life. Through my involvement, I hope to honor Lucy’s legacy and inspire others to do the same.
I encourage everyone to get involved in their own communities, no matter how big or small the effort may seem. The impact of your actions can be much more significant than you might realize.
