Club Team Spotlight: Indiana Magic Gold ’08 National – Moore… Looking to Take It To The Next Level

Not only did the Indiana Magic 08 – Moore team have a strong 2022 on the field, at Scenic City the team even reunited a lost dog with its owner!

The summer travel ball season may be months away still, but that isn’t stopping Indiana Magic Gold Head Coach Andrew Moore and his talented players from eagerly anticipating the 2023 season.

The 14U Midwest-based team, comprised of players from four states, had a strong summer in 2022 and even played up at 16U a few times and, with excellent balance in pitching, offense and defense, the Hoosier State-based squad looks to elevate its game this year.

Eight players on the team will get experience playing freshman high school ball before reassembling to wear their Magic colors in ’23.

Here’s a look at some of the team’s highlights from the Fall 2022 and insights and comments as provided by Coach Moore…

*****

When did the team/program start and how/why did it come to be?
The team core started with Indiana Magic Gold back in 8U.  Most of the current team is based around Central Indiana, with additional members from Michigan, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

The team getting instruction from the coach.

What was the purpose of creating the team?
The purpose in the beginning was to build a foundation to facilitate the development of fundamentals and softball IQ while allowing to the girls to have fun and develop life-long relationships and lessons that will stick with them long after their playing days have ended.  Each year we’ve progressed and grown as a team and now the purpose is ultimately the same, but we’ve also morphed into providing a conduit for these amazing young ladies to pursue their dreams of playing softball collegiately.

What do you think are the strengths of the team?
The staple of this team has always been our defensive identity.  We have placed an emphasis on defensive fundamentals along with softball intelligence that allows them to execute no matter the situation.  It is now just instinctive to them as they have been battle-tested year after year.  Offensively this team has an array of different weapons whether it being hitting for power or contact as well as executing the small ball game with precision.  Baserunning–and taking every inch we can on the basepaths–has been monumental as well in our success over the years.

What is your primary focus or goal with this team?
Our goal is to seek out the best competition across the country to compete against and provide an opportunity for these young ladies to gain exposure by showcasing their talents in front of college coaches that will hopefully allow all of them the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of playing softball collegiately.

What have been some of your successes in terms of winning or placing at events this past year?
Our 13U season record was 78-28-3 and, for our Fall 14U season, we finished 28-12-1 playing up at 14U & 16U. When playing 14U in in the Fall of 2022, our record was 23-7.

The Indiana Magic Gold 08 National – Moore team was strong last fall on offense and defense with title-winning pitching too.

Here’s a list of how we did last year:

  • Scenic City Showcase Power Pool… finished 5-0 in our Power Pool (Nov. 2022)
  • Top Gun Kansas City Invitational… finished in the Sweet 16 of over 50 teams and the only first-year 13U Team to do so (June 2022)
  • Ohio Outlaws Showcase… as a first year 13U team won the 14U Division going 8-1 playing all second year 14U teams (June 2022)
  • Hustle City Invitational Alliance National Qualifier… won the Championship going 8-0 and earned a bid to California Nationals (May 2022)
  • Colorado Sparkler… finished 33rd going 4-2 as we won our Supplemental Power Pool and placed into bracket play in the Power Pools (July 2022)
  • Atlanta Legacy Showcase… finished 4-0-1 going into bracket play when tournament was canceled due to rain (July 2022)
  • Dudley Classic… finished 3rd going 6-1 and beat top-rated Beverly Bandits Norwood in Pool Play (May 2022)

  • LP4U Strike Out Cancer Showcase… finished 3-2 while playing 16U (Oct. 2022)
  • Birmingham Thunderbolts 5-Star Fall Exposure Showcase… playing 16U finished 3-2 (Nov. 2022)
The Magic at the T-Bolts Showcase in the Fall of 2022.

What makes the organization unique, in your opinion?
The team is always pushing to play against the best competition in the country and continues to work to get better every day.  The team is preparing to head to Arizona in January for the PGF Last Blast before our eight freshmen kick off their high school careers.  Once the team reunites this Summer, we are poised to make a great run and showcase their abilities at some of the best events in the country.

How many teams are there in the organization overall?
Currently seven at the national level and nine in the developmental program.

If there is one thing you would say that separates you from other club programs, what would it be?
I would say that our softball IQ is extremely high for this team and age group.  They execute in high pressure situations instinctively and don’t have to even think about it.  These young ladies process the game extremely fast and well beyond their years.  This is something we have worked very hard on at practices over the years as well as learning from competing against the best teams in the country.

PLAYER ROSTER
Infielder Maggie Thorne makes the throw to first as (l-r) Ava Cutter, Keena Streeval and Zoey Chavez look on.

#0 Zoey Chavez, OF/UT (2027)
Zoey is an elite athlete who can make plays effortlessly in the outfield and hold her own in the middle infield. She has worked relentlessly at being a triple threat from the left side of the plate and each weekend we play she showcases all the tools in her toolbox.  Zoey is a nightmare for defenses due to her speed as she applies quite a bit of pressure to defenses in the box and on the base paths.  Look for big things from Zoey come this Summer.

#1 Maggie Thorne, C/3B (2027)
Maggie was ranked #52 in the Extra Elite 100 and behind the plate has impressive control of the field and “her presence on the diamond is unmistakable,” according to Coach Moore. The catcher receives the ball well and always has her head in the game. Maggie frames well and is adept at stealing strikes for her pitching staff. Also, she has next-level instincts, quickness and a strong arm to shut down the opponent’s running game. Maggie is also well equipped to play the hot corner at a high level and is equally strong offensively, as a triple threat that can hit for power.  Maggie also helps coach one of the 9U teams in the IMG organization.

#2 Addie Doak, OF/UT (2027)
Addie is an ideal teammate and can deliver in the box of whatever is needed, whether that be a drag bunt down the baseline or a gap shot in left center, her plate discipline and picture perfect swing make her a hard out for sure.

#4 Ava Cutter, C/UT (2026)
Ava is very versatile athlete and can be plugged into an array of different positions.  Behind the plate she can hold runners at bay with her 68-mph overhand throw or lock down first base with amazing scoops and stretches.  She is also a huge threat roaming the outfield and gunning down opposing runners with her cannon of an arm

Leah Helton pitches as Audrina Yorn (left) and Zoey Chavez wait for the play to unfold.

#7 Leah Helton, P/UT (2026)
Leah, who was ranked #65 in the 2026 Extra Elite 100, has shown time and time again that she elevates her game when the stakes are highest. Head Coach Andrew Moore has said: “Leah performs well in high pressure situations and the bigger the moment, the more she shines.” In the Fall of 2022, she pitched 88 innings with 106 strikeouts and had only nine walks. Leah ended the Fall season with a 1.65 ERA.  Coach Moore adds: “Leah maintains her consistency and spin while facing some of the best teams in the country. She has great mental strength while competing on the mound and she understands hitters’ strengths and weaknesses along with knowing how to identify her own pitch locations.” Leah also carried a .377 batting average with an on-base percentage of 0.466.

#8 Audrina Yorn, SS (2026)
Audrina is a true shortstop who showcases an exceptional glove and powerful arm.  Ranked #38 in the Extra Elite 100 for her class, her speed and athleticism allow her to make plays that most simply can’t.  Her range is impressive and she moves through the ball exceptionally well.  Offensively, thanks to Audrina’s athleticism, she regularly turns singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Says Coach Moore: “Her aggressive base running and power in the box make her an offensive juggernaut.  Audrina not only impacts a game offensively with her power, but she has also been able to change a game with her small ball game by strategically placing pressure on the defense with perfectly placed bunts or for a hit on demand. “Audrina is a 5-tool player with a very high ceiling,” adds her head coach.

Harper Moore in the outfield.

#10 Alyssa Janda, 1B/UT (2027)
Alyssa is a lock-down first baseman who has been with the Magic Gold since this team started in 8U.  Alyssa is the epitome of being the ultimate teammate, she is always cheering and being supportive to her teammates and her ability to have a great attitude and positive impact is priceless in all aspects.  Coach Moore explains: “Alyssa over the years can always make the big play, she is what I call gamer.  If we need a hit, she gets it done, if we need a sac bunt, she gets it done, if we need a scoop at first base on an errant throw she gets it done.  She shines when the light is the brightest.”

#11 Harper Moore, CF/UT (2027)
Harper is a triple threat lefty slapper ranked #34 in the Extra Elite 100 and has exceptional speed and quickness.  She can bat anywhere in the lineup and have a significant impact on the offensive game, whether it be laying down a drag bunt, soft slapping or hitting for power in the gap.  Last Fall, Harper had 58 stolen bases, hit .485 with an on-base percentage of .505 and only struck out three times the entire Fall season. Harper has good range in the outfield and multiple times has made diving catches that steal what would have been hits.

#14 Kenna Streeval, MIF (2026)
Kenna is a sure-handed middle infielder with tool set and softball IQ needed to lock down either middle infield position when called upon. Ranked #68 in the Extra Elite 100 for her class, Kenna can also patrol the outfield where she has the speed, throwing accuracy and ball tracking ability needed to play the outfield seamlessly. Kenna isn’t afraid to get dirty and her diving catches often robs the opponents of hits and her 60-mph overhand throwing velocity, coupled with her throwing accuracy, can quickly turn outs into double plays.  She also holds key starting positions on her high school basketball and volleyball teams.

#18 Brooklyn Kemp, P/1B (2026)
Brooklyn is a stone-faced assassin on the mound, no matter the situation and the stakes, she is as cool as the underside of the pillow.  She is an absolute competitor and will fight to the very last out.  Brooklyn has very good velocity and extreme movement on her pitches, she moves the ball, changes levels and speeds with the best in the country.

Indiana Magic defenders (l-r) Kenna Streeval, Harper Moore and Maggie Thorne await the pitch.

#19 Kennedy Halverson, OF/UT (2026)
Kennedy is a young player who has really come into her own the last two seasons with her softball IQ, athleticism, and fundamentals. She has the ability to change a game with one swing and consistently competes in the box against the best pitching in the country.  She’s a joy to be around and has an amazing attitude.

#23 Zoey Whittaker, C/3B (2026).
Zoey, who was ranked #74 in the 2026 Extra Elite 100, is a 5-tool player who has a strong fire and desire to compete. Loaded with raw talent, the list of her talents includes power, speed, instincts and a strong throwing arm, which has been measured at 67-mph overhand velocity.  “Zoey is a beast at the plate,” says Coach Moore, “often sending softballs into orbit.”

#27 Tess Heffelbower, MIF/P (2026)
Ranked #90 in the 2026 Extra Elite 100, Tessa joined Indiana Magic Gold in the Fall of 2021 and quickly made her mark because of what Head Coach Andrew Moore describes as her “amazing leadership, exceptional softball IQ, big bat and extreme athleticism.” Tessa also possesses a strong base running intuition and, on defense, she splits her time between middle infield and pitching.  Her range, great glove and rocket arm of 64-mph overhand enables her to make big plays.  Tessa is an elite Tincher-trained pitcher who has a combination of speed (59-60 mph), movement and consistency and proved to be a well-rounded athlete that was a big part of IMG’s success last Fall playing against top teams from across the country.
