It’s been a wild coaching carousel this summer, but things seem to be slowing down.
A few Division 1 head coaching positions remain open—including Iona and Holy Cross – but in all, almost 60 jobs have opened at various times this summer.
Here are seven head coaching moves from the summer that are worth noting…
*****
Tony Baldwin → Georgia
Baldwin’s transition into his first career head coaching role was easy – all he had to do was change offices. Baldwin earned a promotion from the Bulldogs’ top assistant spot to the head coaching role and the continuity that the program retains with a familiar face at the helm is immeasurable. Baldwin also brought in former Bulldog playing stars to be his pitching coach (Chelsea Wilkinson) and volunteer assistant (Alyssa DiCarlo) and added a defensive guru to his staff in J.T. D’Amico. The Bulldogs are coming off of a surprise appearance in Oklahoma City, and while growing pains are likely, Baldwin was the right choice to keep the Dawgs annually in the postseason conversation.

Caitlin Lowe → Arizona
Another longtime assistant that took over for a legend following the Women’s College World Series, Lowe has the added benefit of being an alumnus of the program that she now leads. The Wildcats are coming off of back-to-back WCWS appearances in 2019 and ‘21, but saw a strong and loaded senior class depart with the 2021 season. Lowe takes the reins of the program at a time when the program’s on-field identity could see a shift, and it’s a perfect time to see what she’s made of as a head coach. Here’s a preview: The ceiling is quite high.
