It is now at that point of the high school softball season nationally in which just about all of the teams are now playing.
Teams in the Midwest and East, such as No. 4 Roncalli of Indiana, are still dealing with storms and postponements but there are now no more teams listed at 0-0 in this week’s rankings.
It’s not going to be long, however, when many of the early-starting softball states will be in the playoffs.
In Texas, where this week’s No. 1 team in the Extra Elite 80 national rankings, Lake Creek of Montgomery, is located, the regular season only shows three more games. The Lions took over the top ranking two weeks ago and will be looking to win the Class 5A state title.
Lake Creek, remember, could still win its state title and lose games along the way in the Texas playoff system. It’s also important to know that two other highly ranked Texas teams – No. 5 Deer Park and No. 12 Bullard – will be in different playoff divisions than Lake Creek. Deer Park will be looking to repeat in Class 6A. Bullard is No. 1 in the state in Class 4A.
This week’s highest ranked newcomer from the previous Extra Elite 80 is No. 10 Granada of Livermore, Calif. The Matadors were just starting to play in the prestigious Livermore Stampede tourney when the last rankings were released and they ended up winning the title over a field that included previous No. 7 St. Francis of Mountain View. Granada moved up to No. 1 in Northern California and to No. 4 in the state after that tourney and moved up to No. 3 in California this week.
Florida’s rankings have been reshuffled since the last rankings with some important head-to-head results. Previous No. 8 Wellington had to drop down after taking a loss to Park Vista of Lake Worth. Doral Academy had to come up after defeating previous No. 15 Cooper City and getting into a tie with No. 20 Melbourne.
With Melbourne also posting a quality win over Hagerty of Oviedo, we moved up both Doral Academy and Melbourne this week while still keeping Cooper City in the top 20 but now going behind Doral Academy.
