Extra Inning Softball/JWOS College Power Rankings – Week 7 Sees Four New Teams Come In Top 25

Oklahoma players had plenty to smile about after going 5-0 last week.

While there was little change in the top of the Power Rankings, there are four new teams that move in the Top 25 including several that had impressive sweeps.

Here’s how things stack up as of Week 7…

1. UCLA Bruins (27-1, last week: 1)
A week off from conference play saw the Bruins go 2-0 with a pair of run-rule wins over Saint Mary’s and CSU-Northridge.

2. Oklahoma Sooners (29-2, last week: 2)
The Sooners traveled to Lubbock, Texas and recorded a sweep in the three-game series over Texas Tech, run-ruling the Red Raiders in the series finale.

3. Florida State Seminoles (32-3, last week: 3)
A quartet of run-rule wins, including two in a series sweep over conference foe North Carolina State, highlighted the Seminoles’ perfect 5-0 week. The week also included three shutouts for the Seminoles pitching staff.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (33-1, last week: 4)
The Crimson Tide endured their first loss of the season, a walk-off defeat at the hands of Texas A&M in the series finale, and ended their 33-game winning streak that dated back to the start of the year.

5. LSU Tigers (28-6, last week: 6)
A series sweep over Georgia saw the Tigers put twenty-four runs on the board against the Bulldogs in Athens, running their conference record to 7-2.

6. Tennessee Lady Vols (26-5, last week: 5)
Midweek shutouts over Liberty and North Carolina led into a weekend series against Arkansas that saw that Lady Vols take the series win, with a tight 1-0 loss to the Razorbacks in the series’ middle game.

7. Arizona Wildcats (24-7, last week: 7)
Mike Candrea’s Wildcats stayed perfect in Pac-12 play, moving their conference record to 6-0 with a three-game sweep over Oregon State. The Wildcats run-ruled the Beavers in game one, and have allowed just eight runs through the first two weeks of league play.

8. Florida Gators (27-6, last week: 9)
In a week off from conference play, the Gators recorded a midweek 2-0 victory over Minnesota and took a pair of wins in a weekend doubleheader against Mercer.

9. Texas Longhorns (29-6, last week: 10)
Miranda Elish’s no-hitter and walk-off grand slam started the Longhorns off in style in their weekend series against Iowa State; the Horns went on to sweep the Cyclones, finishing the week with twenty-nine runs scored, including a midweek win over Lipscomb.

10. Washington Huskies (25-6, last week: 11)
The Huskies swept through a conference series against Oregon, taking a 10-inning victory in the series opener before recording back-to-back run-rule wins to finish out the series. The Huskies outscored the Ducks 28-5 on the week.

11. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (26-4, last week: 8)
Staying perfect in Sun Belt conference play, the Ragin’ Cajuns ran their conference record to 9-0 with a sweep over South Alabama that saw the squad put thirty-six runs on the board. A midweek loss to McNeese State in 11 innings gave the Cajuns their 4th loss on the year.

12. Arizona State Sun Devils (25-8, last week: 22)
In a conference series against Utah, the Sun Devils dominated the series’ first two games, scoring twenty-seven runs in the pair of matchups, before an offense-heavy game three that saw the two teams combine for 35 runs, including a final-inning comeback for the Sun Devils to earn the series sweep.

13. Minnesota Golden Gophers (22-9, last week: 13)
A tight 2-0 midweek loss at Florida didn’t trip up the Gophers for long, as they rebounded with a three-game sweep at Maryland, scoring 30 runs and posting a run-rule victory in the series’ middle game.

14. Virginia Tech Hokies (27-4, last week: 20)
A pair of run-rule victories over Binghamton and a win over Lipscomb started the Hokies off on the right foot, leading into a conference series against Pitt that saw Pete D’Amour’s squad go a perfect 6-0 on the week. The series against the Panthers including an 18-0 run-rule win in the series opener, while the Hokies finished the week with sixty-seven runs scored in the six games.

15. Auburn Tigers (28-5, last week: 16)
The Tigers dropped the series opener to Mississippi State in a 7-6 final, but rebounded to win the series with back-to-back wins to finish out the weekend.

16. Texas Tech Red Raiders (27-5, last week: 12)
Sporting just two losses to that point, the Red Raiders played host to conference foe Oklahoma, and were swept in the series. Texas Tech’s offense was limited to just five runs in the three games, including a 13-1 loss in the series finale.

17. James Madison Dukes (19-6, last week: 19)
After a doubleheader sweep over Longwood in midweek play, the Dukes run-ruled Elon in the opener of the conference series before dropping the middle game. The Dukes rebounded for the series win with a 10-3 victory in the weekend finale.

18. Oklahoma State Cowgirls (23-9, last week: 17)
Kenny Gajewski’s squad dropped a pair of games on the week, to Tulsa in midweek play and a tight loss to Baylor in the middle game of the conference series. Bookending the Baylor loss, however, were impressive offensive showings from the Cowgirls, including a 21-2 run-rule in the series opener.

19. Ole Miss Rebels (22-8, last week: 23)
Rain kept the Rebels from a likely series win over South Carolina, instead leaving the two teams with one win apiece on the weekend. The Rebels stand at 3-2 in conference play.

20. Houston Cougars (23-9, last week: NR)
Coming out of the American conference and making their first appearance of the year in our rankings, the Cougars swept a midweek doubleheader against Baylor and took the series against Wichita State, trading run-rule victories with the Shockers and taking a 5-4 win in the series’ middle game.

21. Stanford Cardinal (21-4, last week: NR)
Rain forced the cancellation of the Cardinal’s third game against Cal, giving Jessica Allister’s squad a sweep in their first conference series of the year with their 2-0 showing against the rival Bears.

22. Colorado State Rams (23-4, last week: NR)
The third Mountain West team to appear in our rankings this year, the Rams appear with a 6-0 record in conference play and coming off of a weekend sweep of New Mexico that saw the squad produce thirty-four runs on offense and record a pair of run-rule wins over the Lobos.

23. South Carolina Gamecocks (23-8, last week: 24)
The Gamecocks split what wound up as a two-game conference series against Ole Miss (series finale cancelled due to rain) and recorded a midweek win over Duke. SC has yet to win a conference series this season.

24. Georgia Bulldogs (25-9, last week: 18)
The Bulldogs were dismantled by LSU, finding themselves on the sour end of a series sweep on their own home turf in Athens. Now 1-5 in conference play, the Dawgs were outscored 24-12 on the weekend.

25. Michigan Wolverines (19-10, last week: NR)
Hosting Nebraska to begin Big Ten conference play, the Wolverines swept the Cornhuskers, outscoring their conference foe 27-2 with a pair of run-rule, shutout victories.

Dropped out: #14 Kentucky, #15 Wisconsin, #21 Indiana, #25 UNLV
