In Honor of “National Twin Day” This Saturday (Dec. 18), Meet Piper & Reese Lowery… Freshmen at Birmingham Southern & Alabama-Birmingham, Respectively

Piper (left) and Reese Lowery enjoy time together away from the softball fields as much as being on it with each other!

Over the years, we’ve covered a lot of outstanding twin fastpitch standouts including Alannah and Gabby Leach (Univ. of Tennessee), Sage and Summer Scarmardo (Purdue), Hannah and Lauren Camenzind (committed to Arkansas), Alex and Lauren Perren (Yale) and many others.

This Saturday (Dec. 18, 2021) is National Twin Day and to honor the special day—and special siblings– we’re spotlighting a pair of twins who play college ball just a few miles apart collegiately as Piper Lowery attends Birmingham Southern and Reese Lowery is at Alabama-Birmingham,

Any twins want to share your story too? For any softball siblings who’d like to share their thoughts about being a twin—and thoughts good and bad about their sister!—e-mail us by this Saturday (National Twin Day) at info@extrainningsoftball.com. Tell us what you love or get bugged by when it comes to your twin… and we just may run your story!

Piper, a third baseman/shortstop/outfielder, and Reese, a middle infielder/outfielder, were born and raised in Alabama and attended McAdory High in McCalla before graduating earlier this year. Both will be playing their freshman college campaigns in a few months.

The duo is coming off a strong high school campaign that saw them led their Yellow Jackets team to the 2021 Alabama Class 6A Area 8 Championship. Reese batted .400 and had 13 RBIs while Piper hit .304 and had six runs driven in.

Not surprisingly, many of their favorite experiences in softball involves the other: Piper says she laughs every time she remembers when Reese made a base-running gaffe, while Reese treasures the time spent on the fields with her sister and a best friend.

“Reese had run all the way from first to third,” Piper recalls, “but then had to go back because of the player in front of her and instead of crossing back through the base path, she sprinted across the field to first base!”

“Mine would probably have to be back a few years,” Reese begins, “when I got to play with Piper and my best friend Lauren Dill (who now plays at Wallace State), and just remembering the atmosphere of playing with the three of us together on the field.”

“It warms my heart to remember something so simple rather than all the grand plays I could pick— playing next to some of my favorite people was enough for me because they made me a better player and person every single time we stepped on the field.”

The pair are similar in their strengths on the field with each saying they’re “fast and coachable.” Off the field, both players say they are strong in their faith and feel their father, Jason Lowery, has been a great role model, too.

Piper & Reese hold flowers on Senior Day earlier this year.

When asked who her hero is in life, Piper says:

“My dad, because he always shows up even when I know he doesn’t feel like it. He reminds me a lot of Jesus.”

Reese adds:

“My dad is my hero because he is extremely selfless and supportive of our family. People always say, ‘No one is going to believe in you more than you believe in yourself,’ but my dad has always believed in me even in times I doubted myself. He’s very involved and my biggest cheerleader.”

Both also are musical and play the guitar while loving to spend outdoors. The fun comes, though, when we ask Piper and Reese about the other!

Here’s what each of the twins say in answering the same questions…

What’s the silliest question you’ve been asked about being twins?

  • Piper: “Can we read each other’s minds?”
  • Reese: “People always say, ‘Do you just know what she’s thinking all the time? What is she thinking right now?’”

What three words would you use to describe your twin?

  • Piper: “Witty, funny and intentional.”
  • Reese: “Outgoing, loving, kind.”

What is your favorite thing about being a twin?

  • Piper: “I have a built-in best friend. I always have someone to do things with and to share life with.”
  • Reese: “I always have a friend who understands where I’m at in life because we’re always in it together at the same time. She gets me.”

In what ways are you like the other?

  • Piper: “We tend to have the same sense of humor and I would say we’re both pretty stylish!”
  • Reese: “We both have a good sense of humor, we both play guitar, we love kids, and both of our desired future careers have to do with young children. We both are strongly rooted in faith and involved in church. We’re both fast and grew up tying more times than not when we raced.”

In what ways, are you different from your sister?

  • Piper: “We are like night and day. For one, physical appearance is different: straight blonde hair, curly brown hair.”
  • Reese: “I am more introverted and laid back than Piper is, I like tea and she likes coffee. She is a morning person and I’m not. We balance each other because we are opposite in a lot of ways!”

What’s your favorite memory together on the softball field?

  • Piper: “Probably when I got to play shortstop and she was playing second base and we turned a double play. It was so fun!”
  • Reese: “Playing 14 years together makes it hard to pinpoint one favorite memory. I’d have to say when we played middle infield together in travel ball and we turned double plays. We just had a blast with each other. I always love watching Piper succeed and have fun while playing, regardless of my performance.”
