Inside Pitch: 2025 Power Hitter Mia Galella Shines at Summer Camps & at Colorado Sparkler Before Missing Atlanta Legacy This Week for a Tough Reason

Mia Galella is a first baseman/outfielder noted for being one of the top power hitters in the Class of 2025. Earlier this summer, she was ranked in the Top 25 of the Extra Elite 100 as we profiled her with this bio:

T-24—Mia Galella, 1B, Virginia Glory National – Mertz
Mia is one of the the strongest and most naturally gifted players in her 2025 class. She is a dangerous longball threat who regularly hits balls 275-to-300 feet. “Mia’s speed on the base paths is what really opens eyes,” says Head Coach Mike Mertz. She was the only starting freshman on her Holy Cross (Pa.) High school team and has led her team in batting average (.541), hits, on-base percentage, home runs and RBIs. Mia also takes pride in her strength, unofficially breaking the Pennsylvania female deadlift record as a 15-year-old with an amazing 415 pound lift (note: it is unofficial since it did not occur in a sanctioned meet but at her gym). Mia has garnered the attention of multiple ACC, Big Ten and SEC schools.

We first profiled her in an Extra Star Power article published in March 2020 titled: 2025 Power Hitter Mia Galella Has “Freakish Power” & Runs Well Too!

Mia (left) poses with Jocelyn Alo’s sister, Sophia, who played for Team Polynesia in the International Games.

Last year, she made our Extra Inning Softball All-Summer Team for the 16U level after she hit .547 with a .689 on-base percentage with 11 home runs including two each at TCS Nationals, the East Summer Showcase and the VA Glory Strikeout Cancer Invitational.

And this year for Holy Cross High in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, the then-freshman helped her team advance deep into the PIAA playoffs as she hit .544 with a .606 on-base percentage and had nine home runs, seven steals, 38 RBIs and didn’t make an error all season—all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Mia has been a long-time blogger for Extra Inning Softball and in her latest Inside Pitch for us, details some highlights of her summer to date, which has, unfortunately, been put on hold as the Pennsylvania athlete has come down with COVID this week and is having to stay home from the Atlanta Legacy, which she was really looking forward to!

“My mom says I have all the symptoms like the flu,” the incoming sophomore relayed to us this morning. “I was up again all last night (sick) and I’m so exhausted and feel so weak with a 100-degree fever too.”

We wish Mia all the best in a quick recovery and, here, get her insights into what she thought of several top summer camps, competing for her Virginia Glory team in Colorado as well as playing for the International Middle East team at the Sparkler tournament…

On Monday, June 20th, I attended the Virginia Tech camp in Blacksburg, Virginia and, on Tuesday, June 21st, I attended the University of Virginia camp in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Both camps are always very informative and so much fun.

After the UVA camp, my dad and I drove to Philadelphia for our flight to Denver on Wednesday, June 22nd; we were all set to fly out at 4:30 pm EST out of Philadelphia, but our flight was delayed numerous times and then cancelled. We ended up getting rebooked on another flight and then that flight ended up getting canceled as well.

By then, it was about 2:30 in the morning and there were no more flights out to Denver on the airline we were using for another three days.! Fortunately, my dad always figures things like this out and he found another airline that was leaving for Denver at 6:30 AM EST. It was a multi-stop flight, but we finally made it!

I had missed my International Team Middle East 18U practice but we drove right from the Denver airport to a scrimmage scheduled against Team Ireland. I have never been so exhausted in my life going over 36 hours without sleep!

My dad asked me if I wanted to go to the hotel to get sleep instead of going to the scrimmage but I felt I needed to get there. I won’t say it was easy—not just because of our travel nightmare, but also the time change and extreme heat. I was numb but I made it.

After the scrimmage, we then made our way to the hotel in Westminster to check in. We met up with the team for a team dinner and all the players were so awesome. The two other 2025s on the team, Katie Cunane and Mia Mense, are studs!

The next day, we played pool games and then played into bracket. It was a great experience meeting so many players with the same ethic background as me and those from other countries.

After the International Challenge, I attended two camps on the Monday: I attended South Carolina’s camp in the morning and then Florida State’s camp in the evening. They were so much fun. I saw Kaylie Avvisato from our very own Coach Suzy Williamson’s VA Glory 18U National team and Sophia Taliaferro who plays for Indie Chiles’ Fury team at the FSU camp.

On Tuesday, I finally had the chance to get some sleep and recharge my battery. That day, my dad and I went out sightseeing in beautiful Colorado and it was so much fun.

Pool play for the TCS 4th of July Sparkler began on Wednesday and we opened up playing Stars National Gold Krupit/Coleman 16U and the Chicago Cheetahs Bowman 16U.

On my second at bat in my first game, I hit my first home run of the Sparkler about 250 feet. I didn’t even feel like I hit it that well ,but the Colorado air takes the ball so much further than it would normally go!

I knew it was going to be a fun tournament from that point. My Virginia Glory team played very well on Day 1 going 2-0. My dad and I then went over to see Coach Suzy’s VA Glory 18U team play against Firecrackers Rico. It was so amazing watching these two fantastic teams go at it.

On Day 2, my team went 0-1-1. Day 3 we lost, so that meant we had to play four games on Saturday to make it to Championship Sunday. We were at the fields for over 12 hours grinding out four wins against some very good teams and were now in the championship bracket.

We played Lady Dukes Lamar’s 16U team and were tied 2-2 after five innings until they scored a few in the 6th and we ended up losing.

I am so proud of every single player on my VA Glory team; they are all so amazing on and off the field. It was a great run we had, for sure, in Colorado as we played some great softball against great teams.

I would like to thank Triple Crown Sports for putting on such an unbelievable event for all of us players and teams. I’d also like to thank all the college coaches from all over the country who came out to see my team and every other team play these last few weeks.
