Welcome to Madness Monday, our digital deep dive where we skip the softballs and go straight for the big questions dividing the fastpitch world. From dugout debates to social media threads, these are the conversations that get people talking—and we’re bringing them to you every week.
This week’s question: The NCAA’s new rule adds an orange safety bag at first base to reduce collisions — but is it protecting players or overprotecting the game?
The results are in from our Dugout Discussion Polls:
- Love it — safety should always come first, even if it helps just one player avoid injury: 84.75%
- Why do we always try to weaken the game? First obstruction, now this — let athletes play!: 3.39%
- Mixed feelings — it’s safer, but it changes how the game looks and feels: 1.69%
- It’s fine for youth or rec ball, but unnecessary at the college level: 6.78%
- Grateful for safety — but wish rule changes were more consistent across all levels: 3.39%
The overwhelming majority of voters are all-in on safety, agreeing that even one injury prevented makes the change worth it. But the rest of the softball world isn’t so sure—some say it alters the traditional look and feel of the game, while others argue it should only apply to youth levels where collisions are more frequent.
