Supporting Female Athletes: Empowering the Next Generation
The rise of social media has brought about many positive changes, allowing athletes to connect with fans, sponsors, and each other. However, it has also opened the door for negative comments and online hate, especially toward young athletes. Recently, Harper Murray, a student-athlete at Nebraska Volleyball, bravely spoke out about the hateful and hurtful comments she has received online. As one of the top volleyball players in the country, she’s an inspiration to countless young athletes. Yet, like many others, she faces harsh criticism from fans and followers who forget that athletes are people, too.
Murray’s TikTok post sheds light on the serious mental health struggles that online hate can cause. Her vulnerability in sharing her experience is a stark reminder that athletes, regardless of their success, are human beings who deserve respect and empathy. The rise of social media hate has been increasingly pervasive in recent years, with studies showing a significant rise in online abuse during high-profile events like the Olympics. A study from World Athletics found that during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, 809 posts were verified as abusive, with nearly half of those involving racism or sexual content. Unfortunately, U.S. athletes, who represent a small fraction of the global athletic community, were disproportionately targeted.
This wave of negativity is not just an isolated incident—athletes at all levels, especially young women, face a heightened level of scrutiny, making it harder for them to focus on their performances and mental health. Studies have shown that online bullying and harassment can contribute to severe mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. As much as we celebrate their athleticism, it’s crucial that we don’t forget that these young athletes are still growing, developing, and navigating the pressures of social media and public life. They are real people, often facing immense pressure on and off the field.
It’s essential that we, as fans, parents, and communities, stand up for these athletes, particularly women, who are forging paths in sports. These female athletes—whether they are collegiate players or professional stars—serve as role models for young girls across the world. They are breaking barriers, defying stereotypes, and showing the next generation of athletes what is possible with hard work and determination. By lifting them up and supporting them in their journey, we are not only empowering them but also empowering the future of women’s sports.
Female athletes are inspiring young girls to dream big, pursue their passion for sports, and understand that their voices matter—on and off the field. They’re paving the way for more young girls to step into sports, encouraging them to believe that they belong and that their efforts are worthy of recognition and respect.
We must all take the responsibility to be part of the solution. Instead of tearing down athletes through social media, we must foster an environment that celebrates their achievements, uplifts their spirits, and encourages their growth. Supporting these athletes doesn’t just mean cheering for their wins; it means advocating for their mental health, being mindful of the language we use online, and recognizing that they are more than just players—they are individuals with emotions, families, and dreams. Let’s show our support by choosing kindness over criticism and respect over hate.
