Familiar Names in Women’s College World Series
Texas and Oklahoma, the top two teams in the NCAA Tournament by ranking, each advanced through the Super Regional to headline a stacked field at the 2024 Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The Longhorns and Sooners will be joined by Alabama, Duke, Florida, Oklahoma State, Stanford and UCLA.
The opening-day matchups feature Alabama versus UCLA, Duke versus Oklahoma, Stanford versus Texas and Oklahoma State taking on Florida.
Texas, the top-ranked team in the tournament, had to battle to eliminate Texas A&M in the Super Regional. After dropping the opening game to the Aggies, the Longhorns responded by winning the final two games to secure a trip to OKC.
Oklahoma extended its NCAA record tournament winning streak to 18 straight with a sweep of Florida State in the Super Regional. The victory by the Sooners ensures that OU will make a run at history by attempting to become the first team in NCAA history to win four consecutive national championships.
Oklahoma State made it three Big 12 teams in the field as the Cowgirls earned their fifth consecutive trip to OKC by sweeping Arizona in the Stillwater Super Regional.
Duke made school history on Sunday when the Blue Devils traveled to Missouri and defeated the Tigers in the Columbia Super Regional to earn their first-ever trip to the WCWS.
On the opposite end of that spectrum stands UCLA, as the Bruins secured their 32nd trip to the Women’s College World Series by sweeping Georgia.
Stanford is making its second consecutive trip to the WCWS after the Cardinal rallied to defeat LSU. After dropping an 11-1 decision in game one, Stanford rode the right arm of NiJaree Canady to a pair of victories.
The field is rounded out by a pair of Southeastern Conference bluebloods in Florida and Alabama.
Florida earned its 12th Women’s College World Series appearance, and first since 2022, by defeating Baylor in the Gainesville Super Regional. The Gators won the rubber match against the Bears 5-3 on Sunday.
Alabama used a first-inning grand slam from Riley Valentine, and waited out a three-hour weather delay, to defeat Tennessee 4-1 in the deciding game of the Knoxville Super Regional on Sunday. The win secured Alabama’s 15th WCWS trip.
