12U CLUB SCOUTING REPORT

Extra Inning Softball will begin releasing the Extra Elite Eighty 12U Club Rankings starting on Monday, April 27, 2020, so we’ll start taking a look at some of the top teams in the nation.

Let’s take a look at Coach Adam Dorman’s team …

SOUTH JERSEY MYSTICS 07-DORMAN

2019 Fall Record: 23-5 with four tournament championships
2019 Summer Record: 28-27-4
Top Finishes: Runnerup at USSSA 11U Nationals and semifinalist at PGF Futures Invitational

Returners:

  • Braylie LaFisca (2025, P/1B, the team’s true natural lefty)
  • Brenna Hercker (2025, 2B/OF, teams think she’s a lead-off hitter because she’s small and they assume she’s looking for a walk … right until she hits a double in the gap)
  • Camryn Harry (2025, 3B/UT, can play anywhere on the field. Her power combined with her ability to drop down a sneaky bunt keeps defenses guessing)
  • Darby Myers (2025, OF, has a rifle for an arm in the outfield and can track a fly ball as good as anyone. A lefty slapper that also has plenty of power)
  • Lily Marta (2026, OF/2B, an offensive weapon that can soft slap, power slap, bunt for a hit, swing away — she can do it all at the plate and she can steal bases at will once she’s on)
  • Mikayla Fontana (2025, P/1B, had a great fall. She led the team in home runs with four, had a perfect fielding percentage and was dominant in the circle)
  • Morgan Chambers (2025, C/3B, “The Great Wall of Mo” has an absolute cannon behind the plate, she won the catcher pop-to-pop time last year at nationals, and keeps opposing teams from even attempting to steal. A power hitter in the middle of the lineup)
  • Quinn Cunningham (2025, SS/OF, the quintessential shortstop and a leader on the diamond. She thrives under pressure and always comes up with the clutch hit)
  • Sophia Bordi (2025, P/1B, led the team with 28 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs. She struck out 100 opposing batters)

Newcomers:

  • Elaina Faux (2025, C/OF, getting better and better as a field general, becoming more vocal and has done a great job working with the pitchers)
  • Sofia Spatocco (2025, OF/3B, “Taco” has big power potential and great speed. She led the team in stolen bases with 18)

What will it take for your team to be successful this year?
We need to get on the field and play! Our offense always keeps us in games. We need to continue hitting the way we do. We have spent the offseason working on our defense, especially against the short game, where we have had struggles previously in tight games. Our pitching is also always consistent and strong.

Who is your No. 1 pitcher and can you describe her skills? Who are the other pitchers on your staff and can you describe their skills?
I will not say we have a No. 1 pitcher. We have three very different pitchers. This fall, in 139.1 innings, opposing teams only hit .223 against us, we gave up 118 hits and 55 walks and recorded 178 strikeouts.

  • Braylie LaFisca is our lefty contact pitcher. “Burrito” throws a great drop curve that causes opposing batters to weakly hit into outs.
  • Mikayla Fontana has incredible spin and paints the corners of the plate. She keeps batters guessing, not only hitting spots in and out, but changing speeds as well.
  • Sophia Bordi throws hard, 60-plus, and is an intimidating presence in the circle. Throws a curveball for an off-speed pitch.

Can you describe your offense and what some of the strengths are?
Our offense is relentless and we believe there isn’t a pitcher we can’t hit. We hit and hit and hit. We focus on power, but mix in small ball to keep defenses on their toes. We had 289 hits this fall with a team batting average of .438 and only 72 Ks in 764 plate appearances. We also had only 80 walks, a testament to our aggressive style — we put the ball in play and put the pressure on defenses.
