Tell us about your travel team/organization and how you became involved with them?
I have played for Coach Willie Viruet since I was 6 years old. Over the years our team name has changed, but the core group of girls and his philosophy has not

Tell us about your softball experience last summer?
Last summer was the first year my team participated in showcases, so it was a switch in the maturity and level of play. However, my team quickly adjusted and performed well.

How did you do in the fall?
I played in big tournaments like the Thunderbolts Showcase, Senic City Showcase, Ray Seymour Classic and the Alliance SE Championship. I had a .471 average, 23 stolen bases, 15 home runs and 30 RBIs.

Talk about your trip to Puerto Rico…
My trip to Puerto Rico was amazing. The teams we faced were culturally different, they taught us how to dance and they had amazing empanadas and pincho’s at the field. I also had probably the best strawberry slushy I’ve ever had.

Our hotel was on the beach, so each night after games we would go down to the beach and have a blast. Coach Willie is also Puerto Rican–two years ago we went to Puerto Rico, but we weren’t able to bring first place home–and I could see how much he wanted it. So winning it this year was not only for us, but we wanted to win it for Coach Willie. It was a very emotional championship.

Anabela holds the Puerto Rico Cup.

What are some of the things you have planned this summer and what are your goals?
This summer we’re going to big tournaments. My goal is to be the best leader I can be to my team, because there will be times where it’s going to get hard.

Can you talk about your interest in broadcast and media production?
My favorite part is definitely working on the show because I’m working in a group with my classmates. Whether I’m working the audio, the anchor or producer, it all is super fun, but a lot of pressure at the same time. Willie Viruet is my teacher for that class, so also being able to have him teach me something that I would want to end up doing in the future that isn’t softball, is a cool thing to me.

Do you have a secret talent/skill?
I can do a round off/back handspring/back tuck, because I used to do gymnastics. I also enjoy painting. I have my art hanging in the houses of my family and friends.

What’s your most memorable softball story?
My most memorable softball story is when I got to play on the Womens College World Series field this past summer in Oklahoma City with the 12u All- American USA team.
