HOW JENAVEE PERES ENDED UP AT UCLA

One call from UCLA legend Lisa Fernandez was all it took for Jenavee Peres to join the Bruins.

“I got a call from Coach Lisa and she asked if I wanted to come play with UCLA softball,” Peres said. “I was star struck because this was Lisa Fernandez calling me. At San Diego State, we looked up to UCLA, striving to be what they are doing to be successful.”

The power-hitting catcher played three seasons at San Diego State where she holds school records for batting average (.409), on-base percentage (.466) and slugging percentage (.743). She was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and a second team NFCA All-American in 2017 and she was the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2015. Peres, a graduate transfer, has one year of eligibility remaining.

“So one day in the beginning of November I was sitting around playing with my son before I had to go to work, and Lisa called me, said we need a catcher and asked my thoughts of playing here,” Peres said.

“It was a unique opportunity to come back and play after taking a year and a half off. I was hesitant at first after getting into a routine with my big girl life and my son, but my mom and dad said this was a great opportunity and I took it. I was excited to get accepted into a brand new graduate program here at UCLA called Transformative Coaching and Leadership. It goes over a lot of John Wooden’s theories, like coaching and teaching.”

PRACTICE!?!

First rule of practice, never apologize for dingers.

Alana Johnson, a 2022 SS from McComb High, MS, had an outstanding showing at the Select 30 National Camp last month where she ran a camp-high 2.88 in the 20-yard dash and was third in overhand velocity at 65 mph.

It probably comes from all her hard work in the gym.
