EXTRA INNING SCOUTING REPORT

With the 2020 high school softball season approaching, TLI will be taking a look at some of the top teams in the country with the Extra Inning Scouting Report.

TLI talked to Newsome High of Lithia, FL, coach Allyson Lederman about her Wolves, who went 23-5, won a share of 9A District 8 title and reached the FHSAA 9A state championship game last season.

Let’s get to the Extra Inning Scouting Report of …

NEWSOME

Top Returners:

  • McKayla Timmons (2020, 1B/DH, .486 avg, 37 RBIs, 8 HR)
  • Jada Smallwood (2020, UT, .446 avg, 23 RBIs, 5 HR)
  • Jadeyn Ruskowski (2021, 1B/DH, .419 avg, 38 RBIs, 7 HR)
  • Lindsey Harper (2020, SS, .411 avg)

Top Newcomers:

  • Kelsey Winters (2022, P)

What will it take for your team to be successful this season? This year we are coming back with a strong core group of returners (and) with newcomers pushing them every step of the way. If we stay focused and come together as a team, we have a great chance for a very successful season.

Kaitlyn Felton, here seen pitching for her club team, the Tampa Mustangs, will be key to Newsome’s playoff hopes.

Who is your No. 1 pitcher and what can you tell me about her skills? Who else could see some time in the circle? Kaitlyn Felton (2021, P) will be our go-to pitcher this year. Last year, she had 60 Ks in 40 IP. Kaitlyn has worked hard proving herself on this team for the last two years. I am excited to see what she does with the opportunity to be our starter this year. Kelsey Winters (2022, P) comes in with more experience than your average sophomore. Kelsey came from Lakewood Christian and made the high school team as a sixth grader. With her talent and experience, she will definitely see some innings in the circle this year.

What can we expect from your offense? What impresses me the most so far is the work ethic of the seniors, which I hope filters down to the younger players. If we can stay focused on making sure we have quality at-bats, being selective in pitch counts and maintaining a “team first” approach, we should score a lot of runs. We do have a legitimate schedule and will face very good competition. Fortunately, our history and success will mean our opponents will bring their best games and their ace pitchers at us. We can’t wait for the competition.

Did you pick up any impact transfers or did you lose any players to transfers? Kelsey Winters transferred in from Lakeland Christian. Last year, she had a .419 batting average and 111 Ks in 99 IP. We are excited to have her join our program!

Who are the potential All-Section/All-District/All-State players on your team? McKayla Timmons, Jada Smallwood, Jadeyn Ruskowski, Lindsey Harper and Kaitlyn Felton.

Signed and Committed Players: Mckayla Timmons, Ball State; Jada Smallwood, Maryland; Madison Hudson, Coastal Carolina; Lindsey Harper, Tampa; Claire Ginder, Furman; Jadeyn Ruskowski, Clemson; Kaitlyn Felton, Central Florida; and Lydia Castro, South Florida.
