The launch of the FINAL 2023 Extra Elite 100 rankings is coming up fast: Monday, October 24, 2022. And the player submission deadline is THIS Monday, Oct. 17, at 8 PM ET.
And note this, according to Extra Inning’s Brentt Eads, who oversees the player rankings:
“Unlike previous editions of Extra Elite 100 rankings which had ‘ties’ to get more talented players honored, this edition and ones to follow will be more of a true Top 100 list.”
Why make the change?
Eads says the original intent was to honor athletes but more isn’t always better.
“The point of the rankings is to honor athletes who work hard and should be recognized for their talent, efforts and results,” he continued. “A proud mother once told me: ‘My daughter–someday when she has grandkids–can tell her family that she was once a top 100 player… an Extra Elite 100 player.'”
“I look at it as a media honor, like being named Gatorade Player of the Year or something like the Dallas Morning News All-State Team. It’s recognition for talent, work ethic and all of that. Sports people–including players, parents, coaches and others– generally love lists and rankings, be it something like 5-Star ratings or a top 100 list.”
But that doesn’t mean the “comparison factor” is lessened when more are featured.
“Ironically, though,” Eads explained, “as we did ties to get more into the rankings, there was more unhappiness because of the ‘Comparison Game’… for example, ‘My kid is #26 but she’s better than the player ranked #17.’ That takes away from both players being recognized and makes it, unfortunately, a tit-for-tat competition.”
