USA Softball: U-19 Women’s National Team Takes 2, Run-Ruling France Before Walk-Off Against Japan

It came down to one swing of the bat for the U-19 Women’s National Team with Jadelyn Allchin (Huntington Beach, Calif.) walking away as the game’s hero.

Allchin got around on the first pitch she saw clearing the center field fence giving the U-19 WNT a 1-0 hard fought victory over Japan.

The walk off win came after Team USA used hot bats to defeat France 11-2 in five innings in action at the Achille Challenge in Paris.

“It takes teams awhile to form and we are still forming but it was good to build off of what we did yesterday,” said U-19 WNT Head Coach Heather Tarr (Redmond, Wash.).

“Our pitchers dominated today and gave us the chance to find a way to win the game. The defense was great, but specifically the clutch hit in the bottom of the seventh to be able to walk off was huge for Jadelyn Allchin.”

Here’s a recap courtesy of USA Softball of both U-19 wins on Saturday (U.S. time)…

U-19 WNT 11, France 2 (5 innings) / Box Score

A seven-run first inning aided the U-19 WNT to a shortened game victory over the host country France.

Back-to-back triples by Jasmine Sievers (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Jayda Coleman (The Colony, Texas) helped the USA jump out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.

Julia Cottrill

The bats continued to roll in the first with Julia Cottrill’s (Stillwater, Okla.) RBI single before a French error extended the inning. The Red, White and Blue took advantage of a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0 before the game’s MVP Skylar Wallace (Woodstock, Ga.) cleared the base paths with a triple to the gap in left making it 7-0.

The extra base hits didn’t stop there, Sievers tripled for second straight time scoring Allchin. Two batters later Cottrill drilled a RBI double to center and then came around to score on a RBI single off the bat of Frankie Hammoude (Oakland, Calif.).

The 10-0 lead sat well with starter Callie Turner (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) who shut down France in the first two frames. The French responded to the USA’s two-out production with a pair of two-out runs of their own in the third cutting the USA lead down to eight.

In the fourth, pinch-hitter Taylor Pleasants (Houston, Texas) extended the USA lead to 11-2 on a sacrifice fly to center scoring Kassidy Krupit (Suwanne, Ga.) who led off the frame with a single up the middle.

Out of the pen, Megan Faraimo (Vista, Calif.) tossed two innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out four, two of which came in the fifth.

Turner picked up her first win wearing the Red, White and Blue striking out four in three innings of work.

U-19 WNT 1, Japan 0 / Box Score

Zeros filled the line score until Allchin sent the USA’s third hit of the game over the center field fence in the bottom of the seventh.

Right off the bat she knew it was gone as the left-handing hitting outfielder rounded third to a sea of red waiting to celebrate at home plate.

The shutout win for the U-19 WNT saw all facets of its game come together after suffering a 3-0 loss last night to Japan in the team’s first-ever international competition.

Allchin recorded the first hit of the game for the USA on a single to center putting runners at first and second. A hard ground ball right back to the Japan pitcher the next at bat ended the USA threat with an inning ending 1-5-3 double play.

Rylee Trlicek (Hallettsville, Texas) got the start in the circle for the USA. Showing her poise she allowed just one hit through the first three frames. In the fourth, Japan put its leadoff hitter aboard before attempting a hit and run play to try and move the runner into scoring position.

The USA defense wouldn’t allow that to happen on its watch as Coleman fired a rocket from center to Charla Echols (Newnan, Ga.) at third who applied the tag to deflate the Japan threat.

Montana Fouts (Grayson, Ky.) took over the pitching duties in the fifth where she made Japan strand a pair in scoring position on a hard ground out to Echols. Japan threatened again in the seventh with a one-out single.

Fouts battled with Japan’s nine-hitter eventually winning the 15-pitch at bat with a strikeout. A walk made it first and second with two away before Fouts snagged a hard grounder back at her putting the USA back in the dugout.

The picture perfect ending in the home half of the seventh gave Fouts the win and improved USA to 2-1 at the 2019 Achille Challenge. The Red, White and Blue conclude the challenge Sunday, June 23 against France at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. CT).
