Despite trailing by large deficits in three of their four bracket games on Sunday, Corona Angels Tyson ’06 showed its resiliency by fighting back to win TCS April’s Finest 12u Gold at The Great Park in Irvine, California.
The tournament showcased some of the best 12U softball teams California has to offer, including elite teams such as So Cal A’s – Terrones, Firecrackers – Weil, Power Surge – Berndes, I-5 Softball 12U North, Suncats – Natividad/Lee, Explosion – Denio and Corona Angels Tyson ’06.
Trailing by seven runs in Sunday’s championship game, the Angels ’06 mounted a monumental comeback culminating in a 9-7 victory to win the prestigious TCS tournament.
Chasing runs, however, was the theme of the day for the Angels.
Bracket play started with the Angels 06 squad narrowly avoiding a 1st round upset against The Factory 12U Gold by scoring 3 runs in their final at-bat to win 6-5.
The quarterfinal game against Suncats – Natividad/Lee was a hard-fought pitchers’ duel between two of California’s best pitchers in which Tyson ’06 came out on top 1-0.
The semi-final game pitted Angels ’06 against its longtime rival, So Cal Athletics – Terrones. Hard-hitting, A’s Terronesgot out to a quick 4-0 lead, but CA Tyson ’06 chipped away at the deficit and eventually won with a clutch walk-off hit to head to the championship game.
In the title contest, I-5 12U North seemed to have put the game away early with three runs in the 1st inning and four runs in the 3rd inning; CA Tyson ’06, however, responded with eight runs in the next two innings and eventually held on to a 9-7 victory.
Said one coach, “Winning TCS April’s Finest 12U Gold tournament by outlasting California’s best teams is a strong statement by Corona Angels Tyson ’06 that they are at the top of the list of California teams to contend for a PGF Championship later this Summer.”
