There are many factors that go into coaching hires at all levels of athletics. Administrators vary in terms of what qualities they seek in their ideal candidate and it can range from experience, to presentation, to personality and to sport knowledge.
Ultimately, administrators choose who they believe to be the best fit and can deliver value to the athletic department and student-athletes.
On September 25, Extra Inning Softball took a closer look at the 31 head coaching hires made in advance of the 2024 season at the Division I level.
This is the first of a five-part series highlighting impactful coaching hires at the Division I level.
*****
School: Ball State University
Coach Hired: Helen Pena

Coaching Experience: Associate head coach Middle Tennessee State, assistant coach Memphis, assistant coach Menlo, assistant coach Cal State Bakersfield
Playing Career: Cal Poly
Coaching Staff: Matt Burns, Avrey Steiner, Karen Marr
2023 Record: 27-26 overall, 17-12 Mid-American Conference (Fourth)
What’s Back for the Cardinals: The Cardinals will be led by a pair of NFCA All-Great Lakes Region honorees in Haley Wynn and McKayla Timmons. Wynn earned second team all-region honors after batting .377 with a career-high 10 home runs. Timmons also was named second team all-region after hitting .345 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs. Wynn and Timmons were each named First Team All-MAC. McKenna Mulholland also returns for Ball State after earning Second Team All-MAC honors with a .336 batting average, 13 doubles and 28 RBIs. Bridie Murphy will anchor the Cardinals pitching staff after being named to the MAC All-Freshman Team last season. She finished the season with an 8-3 record and a 3.71 earned run average.
What’s To Like About the Hire: Ball State is a program headed in the right direction and with a strong core returning for the 2024 season, Pena comes on board at the right time. Pena was part of a staff last season at Middle Tennessee State that pushed Alabama to a deciding game in the Tuscaloosa Regional of the NCAA Tournament and has experienced what it takes to put a championship team on the field. She also brings the pedigree of having been an outstanding pitcher at Cal Poly and helped lead the team to two Big West championships. Her coaching and playing experience, combined with her desire to deliver student-athlete excellence, make her the right coach to lead the Cardinals in the next step in their growth as a program.
Final Analysis: While Ball State is trending up, Pena and her staff will have to put in the work to continue upward movement. Miami has won four consecutive regular season MAC titles, so taking down the giant of the conference will not be an easy task. Her strength lies in her pitching knowledge and improving the Cardinals staff will be paramount in the continued growth of the program. The long-range challenge will be recruiting student-athletes capable of continuing to elevate Ball State, but this is a good fit and the taste of success enjoyed last year by Pena could propel her to the same heights in Muncie, Ind.
