Poor bugs! For years, countless coaches have instructed young hitters to “squash the bug,” crushing imaginary insects under their back foot to teach hip rotation during the swing. This odd phrase has become a staple in softball and baseball instruction, all in the name of power hitting. The intent may be good, but the execution often misses the mark—and it’s time we stop sacrificing innocent bugs for the sake of flawed mechanics.
