New Extra Elite 25 Fall National High School Rankings (Oct. 25, 2019)

Papillion-La Vista High finished the fall 36-0 and won its state-record 15th Nebraska state championship to stay atop the Extra Elite 25 Fall National High School Rankings.

Two states are done with three more still to go as the first-ever Extra Elite 25 Fall National High School Rankings by Extra Inning Softball get close to being finalized for 2019.

Nebraska and Oklahoma were the two states to have their seasons wrapped last weekend with state championships. Over the next two weekends, Georgia, Missouri and Colorado will be done. For these rankings, we also are including teams from Iowa that concluded their season last summer.

In Nebraska, fall No. 1 Papillion-La Vista got it done with an exclamation point in winning the Class A state title. With University of Oklahoma commit Jordyn Bahl leading the way, Papio (as the locals call the school) pummeled Elkhorn 15-2 in six innings in its final game.

Bahl pitched a no-hitter into the fifth inning and also hit a pair of homers. Kaylee Wagner drove in the first run in the second inning, then ripped a two-run homer in the third. Maggie Vasa also had a big day with a three-run homer and a double.

Bahl told reporters the team was motivated all season after losing twice in the Class A state finals last year to Lincoln Southwest. This year’s team went unbeaten for the first time in school history and won its state-best 15th overall state crown.

Current No. 2 East Coweta still has games left in the Georgia Class AAAAAAA state playoffs, but in the way rankings should be done, teams aren’t going to drop for the last one when they don’t lose or are finished playing.

Also in Nebraska, the Class B state title was won in dramatic fashion by newly-ranked Wayne. The Blue Devils, who won the state title in the same division that previous No. 10 Skutt Catholic was in, were trailing Beatrice 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. That’s when Tori Kniesche stepped up and drilled a two-run, game-winning, state title-winning home run over the centerfield fence.

The Edmond Memorial Lady Bulldogs won the Oklahoma 6A state title in a 3-2 thriller over Owasso.

In Oklahoma, previous No. 6 Broken Arrow was eliminated in the Class 6A semifinals by Owasso and then in the finals it was Owasso falling to Edmond Memorial 3-2.

The Lady Bulldogs, who will return almost their entire lineup next season, were led by sophomore pitcher Jill Dickson (seven strikeouts) and Beth McAnally, who cracked a two-run go-ahead double in the fifth inning.

For this week’s rankings, 6A champ Edmond Memorial was elevated to No. 9 while Broken Arrow (which still had a great season despite not winning its state title) was placed at No 16.

Oklahoma Class 3A champion Tishomingo (which had just two losses on the season) also went in as a newcomer for this week’s rankings. That team won its title in the same division as previous No. 14 Sequoyah.
