Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

* Elizabeth Moffitt, a 2022 catcher/third baseman at Prosper High, moved to North Texas late last summer from California and with few high school softball practices recently because of the brutally cold storm and snowfall, it would have been understandable if she eased into the season slowly.

Yea… no, that didn’t happen.

Elizabeth batted .722 in her first six games with six home runs and 18 RBIs!

Elizabeth had an explosive Week 1 for Prosper High as the junior went 13-for-18 in the team’s first six games and smashed six home runs, three doubles and 18 RBIs to earn the first Extra Inning Softball National High School Player of the Week honors for the 2021 season.

The catcher had at least one hit and one RBI in every game in every game with her most dominating performance being a 3-for-3 game against Cedar Hill High in which she knocked two home runs and seven RBIs.

For the week Elizabeth have video game-like numbers with a .722 batting average, a .737 on-base percentage, a 1.889 slugging percentage and a 2.626 OPS.

After a family move from California late last summer and the long winter, the slugging backstop said she couldn’t wait to get back on the fields again.

“This was our first week back after the big cold storm,” she explains. “My team and I were so excited to get back out on the field. I felt I was very comfortable playing and able to let loose. I was super excited to play high school softball again and the Prosper team is super fun to play with. We have a great time every single game whether it’s in the dugout or on the field.”

Ironically, Elizabeth wasn’t supposed to be in Texas playing this year as she was doing well at Clovis North High in the Central Valley area of California but the COVID pandemic made it the right time for the family to relocate.

“My dad owns a steel fabrication company with his brother (Iron Industries Inc.),” the athlete continues. “They have been wanting to expand to Texas, so they are all planning and eventually going to move out here. My mom runs the party and event division for (Action Equipment Rentals) which my dad is part owner in that company as well.”

“But with no events going on it was devastating for them during COVID. We had the chance to move so it was super exciting for our family to be able to do that. I moved here in September as my parents wanted me to be in school and enjoy my last two years of high school rather than being online. My parents were planning to move out here after I graduated, but covid moved us earlier.”

Elizabeth (left) with her family (l-r): father Rob, mother Desirae and sister Morgan, who plays at Briar Cliff University in Iowa.

After she graduates from Prosper High next year, however, Elizabeth will be heading back to the West Coast to play college softball.

“I am going to Fresno State,” she responds when asked about where she’ll play at the next level, “I grew up watching them and it’s a dream for me to play there. The culture there is like no other feeling. The fans are the best supporters ever. It was the best feeling to want to go back home and represent the valley.”

Elizabeth joined the Texas Glory program after moving to the Lone Star State and attributes her working with program head Kevin Shelton for helping her fast and furious start to the 2021 season.

“In the off season I worked on my mental game and approach. Coach Shelton has helped me a lot with my mental game and helped me see the game from a different point of view. He’s taught me the strategies of the game and it has improved my mental game for sure.”

“Also, my previous coach in California, Sara Pickering, helped me understand my swing physically and taught me so much about hitting. (Prosper Head) Coach Todd Rainwater puts us in the weight room to work on explosiveness and I have physically been much stronger since I moved out here too.”

Coach Shelton has quickly become a fan of the California transplant too.

“Elizabeth is a great kid, she’s humble and unassuming, versatile and coachable. All around, she’s a solid athlete which is no surprise because her parents are awesome!”

With a full season ahead of her and her Eagles team, the 2022 grad knows what she and her teammates want.

“Our school goal at Prosper is to bring home a state title,” Elizabeth says. “We are locked in every day to get better and improve our game. We know the competition is fierce here in Texas, so we are going to trust ourselves and our game to take us as far as we can. My personal goal is to improve every day during practice and games. I want to help my team win a state title in Texas and have a great time with my teammates.”

Runner-Up Player of the Week

* Jayden Heavener, a freshman pitcher/first baseman at Pace (Florida) High was excited to be playing her very first varsity game last Friday and she more than got off to a great start to her high school career.

Ranked #11 in the 2024 Extra Elite 100 and a member of Birmingham Thunderbolts – Burns, Jayden had a game she’ll always remember as she faced district rival Choctawhatchee (Fort Walton) High and in a complete game (7 innings) debut threw a one-hitter, striking out 19 and gave up just one walk in the victory.

Jayden added to her dream debut with a home run as the lefty pitcher was clocked in the mid-60’s with her throws.
