KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — University of Tennessee shortstop Mackenzie Donihoo announced her retirement from the game due to continuing medical issues via a social media post.

“For the last several years, I have battled lingering injuries and after much prayer, and discussions with my family, coaches, teammates and doctors – I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step away from the game I love so much and medically retire,” Donihoo said via her X account.

Donihoo started all 61 games at shortstop for the Lady Vols in 2023 and hit .266 with seven home runs and 53 runs scored. She led the team with 15 doubles and was second on the team with 12 stolen bases.

“I am heartbroken for Lou and our program that her injuries forced this very difficult decision. I know the competitor in her wants to be out there giving her all for Tennessee. Though her time on the field with us was short, she left her mark on the Lady Vol program and I’m blessed to have coached her,” Tennessee head coach Karen Weekly said in a social media post on the Tennessee softball team account.

Donihoo, a native of Mustang, Okla., began her career at the University of Oklahoma.

She burst upon the scene in the 2021 season as she batted .438 on the year with nine home runs and 45 RBIs and was named NFCA First Team All-Central Region and Second Team All-Big 12.

Donihoo had a breakout performance at the Women’s College World Series in helping lead the Sooners to a national championship. She batted .476 with three home runs and a WCWS-best 10 RBIs. She was named to the Women’s College World Series All-Tournament team for her efforts.

“I want to thank my Lady Vol teammates for all of their love and support since I arrived in Knoxville and cannot wait to watch them compete this upcoming season. This is a special group of players who have become my family and lifelong friends,” Donihoo said.
