January 2025 Recap: Exceptional Voices From the Field
Softball is more than just a sport—it’s a journey of dedication, passion, and resilience. In January, Voices From the Field highlighted some of the most influential figures in fastpitch softball, from elite athletes to seasoned coaches. These stories inspire, captivate, and remind us why we love the game.
Each featured guest—Kaylee McDonald, Paul Petricca, Emma Bruggenschmidt, and Mary Kimble Price—shared their unique experiences, revealing the hard work, sacrifice, and drive behind their success. Whether dominating on the field, coaching future stars, or making an impact beyond the game, their stories are nothing short of inspiring.
Let’s take a closer look at these softball game-changers and the powerful lessons they bring to the sport.
1. Kaylee McDonald: The Multi-Sport Star Committed to Southern Miss
Kaylee McDonald, a Class of 2026 commit to Southern Miss, is a force in multiple sports. While her first love is softball, she has also excelled in basketball and track, earning All-District and MVP honors in all three.
Her dominance on the mound set her apart last season. McDonald led the nation in strikeouts as a sophomore, an achievement that landed her a spot as a MaxPreps Second Team All-American. She was also named 6A 2A Softball Conference MVP, proving her impact on the game.
Beyond her skills, McDonald embraces leadership. Her work ethic, determination, and relentless pursuit of success make her a perfect fit for Southern Miss, where she is expected to shine.
2. Paul Petricca: The Hitting Coach Transforming the Game
Few hitting coaches have had an impact like Paul Petricca. With over 30 years of experience, he has trained countless high school, college, and travel ball athletes, guiding them to success. His book, Hitting With Torque: For Baseball and Softball Hitters, has revolutionized how players develop power and consistency at the plate.
Petricca’s coaching career includes leading teams like the Madison Night Mares, Roosevelt University, and Wheaton College to offensive dominance. Under his guidance, hitters have set school records, earned All-American honors, and secured scholarships to top programs.
But what sets him apart? His passion for giving back. Petricca has volunteered as a hitting coach for decades, refusing compensation because his reward comes from seeing players succeed. His story is a testament to the power of selfless mentorship in sports.

3. Emma Bruggenschmidt: Playing for More Than Just the Game
Emma Bruggenschmidt, a Class of 2026 Indiana commit, is ranked #3 among infielders and #22 overall in the Extra Elite 100. As a shortstop for the Beverly Bandits, she has helped lead her team to Premier Division PGF and Triple Crown championships.
However, her journey is about more than just stats. Bruggenschmidt plays in honor of her late sister, Kate, who tragically passed away in an ATV accident. She wears #12 in her memory and has helped advocate for ATV safety laws through the Play for Kate Foundation.
Her commitment to hard work, resilience, and honoring her sister’s legacy is what makes her one of the most inspiring young athletes in the sport today.
4. Mary Kimble Price: A Leader On and Off the Field
Mary Kimble Price, ranked #80 overall in the Class of 2025 Extra Elite 100, is a Jones College commit with an impressive resume. A four-time Offensive MVP at Kosciusko High School, she has consistently dominated at the plate, earning All-State and MAC All-Star honors.
But her leadership isn’t limited to the field. Price is also Class President, Vice-President of Mississippi’s HOSA Chapter, and a top academic competitor. Balancing athletics and academics, she proves that success in sports extends far beyond the game.
With her competitive mindset and drive for excellence, Price is set to make an immediate impact at Jones College.
Final Thoughts: The Future of Softball Looks Bright
January’s Voices From the Field interviews showcased four game-changers who are shaping the future of softball. From McDonald’s dominance in multiple sports to Petricca’s coaching impact, Bruggenschmidt’s inspiring journey, and Price’s leadership, these individuals prove that success in softball is built on passion, perseverance, and dedication.
Their stories remind us why we love this game. They motivate the next generation to push forward, overcome challenges, and chase greatness.
Stay tuned as we continue to highlight more rising stars and softball leaders throughout the season!
