Finding My Path: Jayden Mount’s Advice for the Class of 2026 Going into September 1
As a former DI softball player at The University of Louisiana Monroe and Collegiate softball Coach at the University of South Alabama, I want to share my journey with you and offer some perspective as we approach the September 1st contact period for Division I softball. I hope my experiences can provide some guidance for the Class of 2026 as they navigate this exciting yet challenging time.
Navigating the Ups and Downs of Collegiate Softball
My story begins at the University of Louisiana Monroe, where I played collegiate softball from 2017-2021. I was fortunate to have a successful start, earning Second Team All-Sun Belt and Second Team All-Region honors in 2018. But as with any journey, mine wasn’t without its struggles. The year 2019 brought unexpected challenges. I struck out nearly three times as much as I had in 2018 and found myself struggling to get on base. My confidence took a hit, and despite my efforts to improve by hitting the field multiple times a day, I started feeling burned out.
The Turning Point: Advice That Changed Everything
During this difficult period, Coach Molly Fichtner gave me some advice that I initially resisted but ultimately transformed my approach to the game.
She told me,“Don’t come to the field tomorrow—take the whole day off.”
At the time, I was frustrated and thought that taking a break would only set me back. But I followed her advice, rested, and took the opportunity to reflect and read my Bible.
Finding True Identity Beyond the Field
Coach Molly also suggested I speak with a sports psychologist. Although I was embarrassed, I took that step. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. I learned that I had been tying my self-worth too closely to my performance on the field. My identity was wrapped up in whether I was getting hits or getting on base. Through my conversations and increased spiritual focus, I realized that my worth wasn’t defined by my batting average. I found comfort in understanding that Jesus Christ values me for who I am, not just for my athletic achievements. My identity shifted from being a player focused solely on stats to someone who plays to honor God and use the talents He has given me.
Coaching Experience: From Graduate Assistant to Assistant Coach
After completing my undergraduate degree in Sports Management, I stayed at ULM as a graduate assistant, where I earned my master’s degree in the same field. My coaching journey then took me to the University of South Alabama, where I served as a Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach in 2022 before being promoted to Assistant Coach in 2023. My two years at South Alabama allowed me to apply the lessons I had learned as a player and help develop new talent while continuing to grow in my coaching career.
Encouragement for the Class of 2026
As we approach September 1, the start of the Division I contact period, I want to offer a word of encouragement to the Class of 2026. No doubt this is a stressful and demanding time. The pressure to hear from your dream school can feel overwhelming, but I urge you not to place your identity in whether you receive that call right away. Remember that only 1.7% of high school seniors move on to play Division I softball. It’s okay if you don’t get a call immediately. It doesn’t diminish your worth or potential.
Trusting the Process and Embracing the Journey
Trust that the good Lord has a plan for your life. You are going to end up where you are meant to be. This period in your life is a special one, and it’s important to savor it. You’ll look back in 20 years and wonder why you didn’t enjoy the process more. So, take this time to appreciate the journey, the opportunities, and the growth that comes with it.
Final Thoughts and Best Wishes
Enjoy the ride, keep working hard, and remember that your value is not determined by a single phone call or recruitment status. Embrace this moment and trust that everything will fall into place as it’s meant to.
I wish each of you the best as you move forward in your softball careers.
