ALL-TIME CHRISTMAS MOVIES
Barstool Sports recently posted its “Top 10 Christmas Movies of All-Time” list. TLI doesn’t like to criticize other publications, but TLI believes a number of movies got left off the list.
“My favorite Christmas movie is the ‘Polar Express,'” VA Unity 06-Curry 2024 Lili Smith said. “My favorite quote from the movie is during the hot chocolate scene when Tom Hanks sings, ‘Here we only got one rule … never, ever let it cool.'”
TLI enjoys action flicks, Rom-Coms and independant films, but Chrismas movies are right up there.
“My favorite Christmas movie is Elf,” said UMBC-commit Haley Luginbill of Virginia Legends Premier. “My most favorite quote is ‘He’s an angry elf,’ haha. I also like’the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.’”
“A Christmas Story,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Bad Santa” also received picks from the softball community.
Here’s TLI’s Top Christmas Movies of All Time List:
10. Fred Claus:
Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn), the trouble-making/criminal brother, gets bailed out by his saintly sibling, ime.mas. “You are the best big brother anybody could ever ask for,” gets TLI poked in the eyes every time.
9. Frosty the Snowman:
A discarded magic top hat brings Frosty (Jackie Vernon) to life, gets stolen by professor Hinkle before a group of children save Frosty from melting. Frosty definitely has one of the best Christmas songs ever.
8. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer:
A young Rudolph gets banned from the Reindeer Games, meets an Elf, a prospector and the Abominable Snowmonter on his adventures until he helps Santa save Christmas. “I love this Christmasy time of year.” always gets me.
7. Home Alone:
Kevin McAllister (Macauly Culkin), a bratty 8-yera-old, gets left behind when his family goes on a trip to Paris and he must do battle with two con men/criminals, Harry and Marv (Joe Peschi and Daniel Stern), in this Christmas classic. “Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish! You better come out and stop me!” always kills me.
6. The Night Before:
Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) are three childhood friends, who annually reunite on Christmas Eve in search of the best party in New York City, in this stoner comedy. “She Home Alomed me!” is great, but “That gives us several hours to hit as many traditions as possible,” has to be the best.
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation:
Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations, but, you know, everything goes wrong. Griswold also has one of the greatest quotes ever, “Russ, when was the last time I overdid anything?”
4. A Christmas Story:
This film follows the exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward) and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a “Red Ryder air rifle.” Remember, don’t “shoot your eye out.”
3. Elf:
Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves, but he’s unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in. The adult Buddy travels to New York, in full Elf uniform, in search of his real father (who turns out to be James Caan) and we have a Christmas story. I love Buddy’s plan: “I planned out our whole day. First, we make snow angels for two hours, and then we’ll go ice skating, and then we’ll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse Cookie Dough as fast as we can, and then to finish, we’ll snuggle.”
2. Scrooged:
This mvie is brilliant. Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a cyncical and selfish TV executive, in this retelling of Charles Dickes’ “A Christmas Carol.” Cross is visited by a succession of ghosts as he learns the true meaning of Christmas. “Have you tried smaller staples?”
1. Die Hard:
This movie might has well be named “The Battle for Nakatomi Tower” with a bare-footed John McClane (Bruce Willis) battling villainous Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his band of Euro villains. It’s loaded with action and great quotes such as “Yippie-Ki-Yay, (blank),” “Welcome to the party, Pal,” “We’re gonna need some more FBI guys, I guess” and “Come out to the West Coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs …” from McClane to “He won’t be joining us for the rest of his life” from Gruber. And is features Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” on the soundtrack.
