TEAM PROFILE: TN MOJO 08-LEWIS

Brittany Lewis, a former standout at Jonesboro High in Georgia, has coached a number of teams at multiple age groups and now her focus is on the 14U division with TN Mojo 08-Lewis.

Lewis guided her team to the USSSA Elite Select Double Down Gold championship in January in Las Vegas. Mojo-Lewis went 21-5-1 in the Fall, winning the All Fastpitch Classic and went undefeated in the Super Pool at the Thunderbolts Showcase before the tournament in Las Vegas.

Mojo-Lewis, which has 14 players from five states and is loaded with future Power 5 recruits who were USSSA Select 30 invitees, should be a contender at major events all summer.

Lewis recently talked to Extra Inning Softball about her club…

TEAM PROFILE Q&A

When did the team/program start and how/why did it come to be?
Mojo 08-Lewis started in the fall of 2020 after my older team finished out 18s and started college that summer. Brooks Cherry, TN Mojo founder/owner, asked me to drop back down and create a Premier National Team for the 08 age group in our organization. I agreed to do that and have put together a top-ranked national program based out of the Southeast.

Where are you based and where do your athletes come from?
We are based out of the Southeast. I have kids from Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and North Carolina. We practice in Georgia mainly, but also practice at the location of our tournaments. I’ll have the kids arrive a day early and hold a practice to better fit the schedule of our families.

What was the purpose of creating the team?
The purpose of creating this team was to put together a group of like-minded athletes and families that want to learn the fundamentals of the game, play at the highest level you can play, earn collegiate scholarships to continue their playing careers and most importantly reach each kid with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Softball will end one day. My goal is develop a team of capable and responsible women that are ready to go and make an immediate impact in this world.

What have been some of your successes in terms of winning or placing at events?
We have placed Top 5 at Colorado Sparkler, won PGF state, won PGF Florida Classic, won Las Vegas Double Down 32, won our Super Pool at the Bolts 5 Star Showcase, placed third at WFC nationals and have placed or won many other regular season tourneys.

The team has successfully blended players from Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and North Carolina into a title-contending powerhouse.

What makes the organization unique?
The Tennessee Mojo organization is unique because we put an emphasis on serving the athlete. We purposefully look for coaches that understand how to develop young ladies on and off the field, while also knowing how to win. We have really expanded in the last two years and even though we aren’t as tight knit as we used to be, I know that I can call any coach in this org for anything. We are family and our values will not waiver.

What’s your softball background and how did you get to the point of leading the team?
I’ve played softball my whole life. When I got out of college, I knew I wanted to give back to this game so I started coaching at the high school level and also coached a local B level 14U travel team. I took that team to three different orgs as they progressed physically in this game. We started at Foundation Sports Fastpitch, moved to Georgia Impact for two years and then to TN Mojo where all 18 kids signed Division I softball scholarships, finished seventh at PGF Premier and third at Triple Crown Nationals. When they graduated, I dropped back down to start this team and added two very knowledgeable former Georgia Tech softball players to my coaching staff.

How many teams are there in the organization overall?
When I joined Mojo, we had 13 teams. We have expanded quite a bit in the last three years and although I miss the small feel we used to have, it’s exciting to see the Mojo name across the nation.

Has there been a key moment or defining experience in the team’s history?
I think this fall there have been a few defining experiences that have separated this team from the competition. Winning the PGF tournament right out of the gate this Fall with some new pieces to winning our Power Pool as the only 08 team at the Bolts Showcase to going undefeated in Las Vegas (in January) at the Double Down 32 brought this tight-knit group even more together. Watching their chemistry grow on and off the field has been very special. This is a group that you start watching and can’t stop. They are that entertaining and electric on the field.

What is your primary focus or goal with this team?
My primary focus with this team is to develop these athletes into fundamentally-sound softball players with high game IQ’s. My goal is to build mentally-tough competitors that can be successful not only in this game, but in life. We also have a goal of sharing the gospel with the world through our travels in this sport. We recently started a platform called “All Bases Covered,” founded by one of my athletes, that puts an emphasis on spreading the Word of God. We have created pamphlets to give out at the end of our games with the message of salvation on them. Softball doesn’t last forever … we have to be ready for eternity.

Wetherly Ridley is one of several standout pitchers for the 14U team.

What do you think are the strengths of the team?
This team has a ton of strengths. We have a strong and powerful lineup that can do damage up and down the order. We have a solid mix of speed and power that produces a lot of offensive excitement. Defensively, we have a very, very strong rotation of pitchers that all compliment each other and can be the ace at any time. Our catchers are elite and our infield is stout. We have the right people on the bus and when they are in the right seats. This team is powerful on both sides of the ball.

If there is one thing you would say that separates you from other club programs, what would it be?
I think what separates us from other programs is our ability to put 14 thirteen-year-old kids together from five different states and be successful. It’s very difficult to find like-minded kids and families that know how to put in intentional work on their own to be successful. Because I don’t see them every single week for practice, our kids have to commit to both offensive and defensive private lessons and group work away from the team.

You don’t find many 13-year-olds as mature as what we have and willing to put in the work necessary to be successful at the national level. It’s a very demanding lifestyle that most do not get or understand. On top of physical training and staying elite in their academics, they are actively involved in other sports, team book studies, devotions and sending emails to college coaches weekly.

Anything else interesting or fun that I could use to portray your team as a top organization?
Other than what I have already mentioned, I think it should be noted that our coaching staff has no kid on the team and will stay with this group through graduation just like I did the last one. I also have Halle Bailey on my team, daughter of Sarah Fekete who was a Hall of Famer at University of Tennessee and a Softball Olympian. Our team is being actively followed and recruited by multiple Power 5 programs already. There are exciting times ahead for this crew!
