The Power of Teammates: How Softball Created Lifelong Friends
There’s something special about the friendships forged on a softball field. Teammates are the people who witness each other’s greatest victories and toughest losses, share in every laugh, every tear, and every long road trip. Recently, I had the honor of standing beside one of my closest friends on her wedding day, as a bridesmaid in a bridal party that was full of former teammates. The bride, her maid of honor, and I have all been friends since we were 12 years old, our bond strengthened over countless hours on the diamond and years of life shared. Our friendship started because of softball, but it has lasted because of the values we learned and the memories we created together.
A Bond Beyond the Game
Softball brought us together in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we were young. It taught us about trust, resilience, and teamwork, but also about laughter, late-night talks, and pushing through tough times together. It’s hard to explain to those outside of the sport just how much these relationships mean, but for those of us who’ve lived it, these friendships are among the most profound in our lives.
Teammates aren’t just people we play with; they’re people who see us at our best and worst, who celebrate our successes and pick us up when we fall short. The moments we share—both the highs and the lows—shape who we are and build a connection that only grows deeper with time.
From Dugouts to Wedding Aisles
At the wedding, looking around at my fellow bridesmaids—friends I’d played with at Troy University and others I’d known since childhood—it was clear how much these connections mean. We each have our own lives now, with new cities, new jobs, and new families, but we still find ways to stay close. And on that special day, as we celebrated one of our own, it struck me how grateful I am for the role softball has played in my life.
Grateful for the Game and the Friendships It Built
Softball has given me so much—skills, experiences, memories—but the friendships will always be one of the greatest gifts. When we look back, we remember the games and practices, but we also remember the people beside us, the teammates who became family. The laughter in the dugout, the shared determination on the field, the endless road trips—these are moments that last long after the final inning.
Thank you, softball, for not only shaping me as a player but as a person. For every teammate who became a friend and for every friend who became family, I am grateful.
